While the title page bears 'Burns Oates & Washbourne,' the colophon states: 'Printed in Great Britain at the Mayflower Press, Plymouth. William Brendon & Son, Ltd. for the Nonesuch Press'. This title is no. 67 in the Nonesuch catalogue, printed in Monotype Caslon on machine-made laid paper (McKitterick et al, 67). Includes "Some contemporary appreciations": pp. 55-[58]. Alice Meynell (1847-1922) was a celebrated poet, prolific essayist and committed suffragist. 'W. M.' was her husband, the publisher and editor, Wilfred Meynell. Their youngest son, Francis, ran the Nonesuch Press with his wife, Vera, and David Garnett. The Press was set up to produce books according to a 'triple ideal: significance of subject, beauty of format and moderation of price.' (cited in Dreyfus).
