"Willem, le plus redoutable et sans doute le plus drôle dessinateur de la presse française, ne s'était pas encore essayé au livre à système. C'est chose faite avec son nouveau livre, un pêle-mêle intitulé "Les Amours impossibles". Petit rappel pour ceux qui ont oublié leurs jeunes années : un pêle-mêle est un album cartonné dont les pages sont coupées en deux en leur milieu. Si on tourne une moitié de page en laissant la précédente, on obtient à chaque fois ou plutôt deux fois si on prend en compte la page opposée un dessin qui s'adapte parfaitement à celui resté sur place, et ce, à l'infini. Il s'agit d'un travail de titan, que Willem a réussi à la perfection. Tout commence calmement, avec une interprétation très libre du penseur de Rodin. Les choses se gâtent assez rapidement et ce n'est pas sans perspicacité que le facétieux dessinateur a sous-titré son ouvrage « et autres accouplements abassourdissants. » Les planches obtenues témoignent en effet d'une sexualité très libre et sans aucun tabou, faisant la part belle à toutes les perversions connues, de la zoophilie à l'homosexualité gérontophile, et on en passe" (Alain Dreyfus - ART NET).

Constitué de douze planches découpées horizontalement en vingt-quatre volets, permettant ainsi de démultiplier les possibilités de lecture, en mélangeant formes humaines, animales, végétales et objets dans un capharnaüm d'associations étranges. Les Songes drôlatiques de Pantagruel (où sont contenues plusieurs figures de l'invention de maître Rabelais). Richard Breton, qui publia la première édition (1565), confia sa composition au graveur François Desprez, rue Saint-Jacques. Si l'édition originale en attribue la paternité à Rabelais, mort douze ans auparavant, c'est sans doute parce que son nom pouvait faire vendre un livre à une époque où s'achetaient, chez les libraires imagiers, des crotesques et des drolleries, c'est à dire des gravures représentant des scènes mi-effrayantes, mi-comiques, dans la tradition savante et populaire de l'invention monstrueuse.
