It explains how to set out and write better letters, memos, instructions, legal documents, and reports. Paperback. Condition: Good. This French dictionary from Oxford's "Starter" range has been specially designed for beginners and is not simply a scaled-down version of larger dictionaries. The symbols on the page provide a consistent structure for the information both in English and French, and the subdivisions of text are indicated using bullet points and Arabic numerals. The move from one language to another is indicated in = signs. There are no abbreviations, and parts of speech, gender labels, regional markers and grammatical terms are all given in full with a glossary providing explanations and examples of different parts of speech in use. More complex grammatical issues are dealt with in short notes at appropriate points in the text or in the more detailed boxed grammar notes. The language used in examples and in sense indicators (or signposts to the correct translation) is screened to ensure clarity to guide the learner to the right translation. Points of basic grammar are reinforced and colloquial usage is marked for both English and French. Vocabulary relevant to areas such as days of the month, games and sports, and talking about time are given and there is an "Extra Help" section and a "Dictionary Skills" section to help learners to find their way around a dictionary in addition to building up their vocabulary. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condition: Good. By the outbreak of the First World War England had become the world's first mass urban society. In just over sixty years the proportion of town-dwellers had risen from 50 to 80 per cent, and during this period many of the most crucial developments in English urban society had taken place. This book provides a uniquely comprehensive analysis of those developments - conurbations, suburbs, satellite towns, garden cities, and seaside resorts. The author assesses the importance of London, the provincial cities, and manufacturing centres; he also examines the continuing influence of the small country town and `rural' England on political, economic, and cultural growth. In many respects, P. J. Waller's book is a general social history of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century England, seen from an urban perspective. It is both scholarly and immensely readable. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.
