"Two major space observatories launched in the last few years--NASA's Chandra and the European Newton--are now orbiting the Earth, sending back a gold mine of data on the X-ray universe. Schlegel, who has worked on the Chandra project for seven years, describes the building and launching of this space-based X-ray observatory. But the book goes far beyond the story of Chandra. What Schlegel provides here is the background a nonscientist would need to grasp the present and follow the future of X-ray astronomy. He looks at the relatively brief history of the field, the hardware used to detect X-rays, the satellites--past, present, and future--that have been or will be flown to collect the data, the way astronomers interpret this data, and, perhaps most important, the insights we have already learned as well as speculations about what we may soon discover. And throughout the book, Schlegel conveys the excitement of looking at the universe from the perspective brought by these new observatories and the sharper view they deliver." | SHIPS AIRMAIL INTERNATIONALLY!.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Peggy Turley (illustrator). 1st Edition. Written in 1935 as a follow up to their first children's book, "Popo and Fifina" (1932), this is the first publication of this story of two cultures written by Langston Hughes and his collaborator Arna Bontemps. It's a meaty tale of the friendship between an American boy and a Mexican boy and the toy that brings them together. Kids will learn much about Mexican life and culture. There are lots of little drawings throughout the book, but the highlight is the thirteen full page paintings by Peggy Turley, which burst with the bright and vibrant colors and symbols of Mexico. There is an Introduction by Bontemps' son, and an Afterword by Cheryl A Wall, a Rutgers English Professor. A fine copy in a near fine, slightly rubbed and edgeworn dust jacket.

Condition: Very Good. A tight clean softcover, no markings throughout: The past two decades have seen swift and radical change in the way literature is perceived and taught in this country and abroad, as numerous new schools of theory have blossomed, particularly at Yale, Johns Hopkins, and Cambridge. Intended as an introduction to these new theories, Beyond Deconstruction offers a balanced and lively overview that steers clear of technicalities as it explains, explores, and occasionally takes issue with the large movements that have followed the so-called "practical" criticism of F.R. Leavis and others. Felperin focuses on the major schools and figures of structuralism, Marxism, and deconstruction, providing readers with a clear grasp of the ideological and methodological issues involved. In its responsiveness to developments on both sides of the Atlantic and to relations and differences between them, Beyond Deconstruction provides a comprehensive and incisive introduction to the field.

Condition: Very Good. Millions of us are professional writers without even being aware of it. Eve ryday we write countless letters, memos, instructions, legal documents, and reports. And often this writing is criticized for being full of jargon, or obscure, or long-winded, or just not in "plain English." But what is plain English, and how does one write it? The Plain English Guide offers down-to -earth advice and twenty easy-to-follow guidelines covering plain words, se ntence length, active and passive verbs, punctuation, planning, and good or ganization of points. Martin Cutts has probably taught more writers about p lain English than anyone else. This book distills his knowledge and experie nce, and is an essential guide for anyone who writes at work, as well as st udents in business and professional courses.
