Hard Back. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition First Printing Stated. 338 Pages Indexed. Dust jacket price $25 is unclipped. Most Americans eat genetically modified food on a daily basis. Yet many of us are barely aware that we're eating something that has been altered. Food labels do not inlude information on ingredients that have been genetically modified, and the subject has received surprisingly little media coverage. Even as genetically engineered foods spread throughout America, most consumers abroad have refused to eat them. Opposition to genetically engineered food is now beginning to surface in the United States, where biotechnology is becoming a major issue for the new century. Here is the story of how these new foods, most of which are engineered either to produce or to withstand heavy doses of pesticides, quietly entered America's food supply. The author explores the potential of this new technology to enhance nutrition and cut farmers' expenses. She also reveals the porcess by which regulatory agencies decided to allow the biotechnology industry to sell its products without first submitting them to thorough testing for possible long-term threats to consumer health and the environment. Hart has talked to scientists, farmers, industry memebers, and activists, and she has gained unprecedented access to the inner chambers of the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Food and Drug Administration, where the crucial decisions have been made to allow these foods into our stores. Combining a balanced perspective with a sense of urgency, this is a revelatory guide to a subject of paramount importance.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. Illustrated by Johannes Troyer (illustrator). 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Cover Art; This is a Review Copy. This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a beginning hint of toning to the edges of the endpapers. The dust jacket has some noticeable toning to the spine and spine joints of the dust jacket. "In this her latest magical evocation of the past, she takes the reader into sixth-century Britain, to Cornwall, the Scillys, Ireland, and Wales. Young Ruan, nephew of the Druid high priest, is destined and prepared for the priesthood. Turbulent, avid for adventure, and restless for fulfillment, he feels caged in the monotonous schooling of the Celtic priests, and longs for the high seas." "Bryher (2 September 1894 28 January 1983) was the pen name of the English novelist, poet, memoirist, and magazine editor Annie Winifred Ellerman, of the Ellerman ship-owning family. She was a major figure of the international set in Paris in the 1920s, using her fortune to help many struggling writers. With her lesbian lover Hilda Doolittle (H. D. ) and Scottish writer Kenneth Macpherson, she launched the film magazine Close Up, which introduced Sergei Eisenstein's work to British viewers. From her home in Switzerland, she helped to evacuate Jews from Hitler's Germany, and then became a popular historical novelist." (from Wikipedia).

Includes Chronological Table, Selective Bibliography, and Index. 22 black and white photographs follow page 152. Ludwig Reiners (born January 21, 1896 in Ratibor; ? August 10, 1957 in Munich) was a German businessman and writer. Reiners was the son of a cigar manufacturer. He passed his Abitur in 1914 at the high school in Ratibor. Then he took part in the First World War. He studied law and economics. In 1920 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the economic measures of the Munich Soviet Republic and was entitled Dr. jur. Dr. rer. pole. Then he began a career as a businessman in the position of stock exchange representative of Deutsche Bank, became an assistant director in heavy industry at Deutsche Werke AG, a timber trader in the Balkans as an authorized signatory of a Swiss timber company. Reiners was a member of the NSDAP during the Third Reich . During the Second World War and after the was a sales director of Richard Jung's yarn factory in Munich. In 1957 he died after a short, serious illness. Reiners grew up under the spell of Prussia as well as the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and its atmosphere, which he describes in his description of the prehistory and course of the First World War In The Lamps Went Out in Europe. The Lamps Went Out in Europe is a chronicle of the mistakes that led to the First World War and the defeat of the Central Powers and the dissolution of the German Empire. The annexation of Schlewsig-Holstein by Prussia was only the prelude to German unification, but even in taking this first step Bismarck had the entire world against him. England, France, Russia, and Austria opposed this action, but so did the German people, and so did King Wilhelm of Prussia. Bismarck first secured Russia's friendship by helping the Czar to suppress a Polish uprising. He then kept Napoleon III in check by dangling before him vague promises of territory in Belgium or the Rhineland, rightly calculated that he had nothing to fear from England because of Gladstone's indecisiveness, and lured Austria into the game on his own side. "The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time", British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey remarked to a friend on the eve of the United Kingdom's entry into the First World War. First published in Grey's memoirs in 1925, the statement earned wide attention as an accurate perception of the First World War and its geopolitical and cultural consequences. In 1927, John Alfred Spender, editor of the Westminster Gazette until 1922, identified himself as the friend to whom Grey had spoken: I had two short talks with Grey during the "twelve days." I ran into him on the stairs of the Foreign Office on Saturday, August 1st [.] I saw him again late in the evening at his room at the Foreign Office on Monday, August 3rd, and it was to me he used the words which he has repeated in his book, "The lamps are going out all over Europe, and we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime." We were standing together at the window looking out into the sunset across St. James's Park, and the appearance of the first lights along the Mall suggested the thought. Grey's quotation has been used as a summation of the war in numerous historical works. The German author Ludwig Reiners (1896-1957) published an account of World War I entitled The lamps went out in Europe. Therein Grey's comment is followed by the assertion attributed to Otto von Bismarck: "The mistakes that have been committed in foreign policy are not, as a rule, apparent to the public until a generation afterwards." Samuel Hynes began his 1990 A War Imagined with a paragraph covering the quotation, referring to it as the best-known and most often quoted response to the beginning of the war. In 2014 Grey's words were the inspiration for part of the British commemoration of the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Between 10 and 11 p.m. on 4 August 2014, lights were dimmed at many public locations and in private homes, including progressively at a national memorial service in Westminster Abbey. Presumed First U.S. Edition, First printing.

Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. "To the Ends of the Earth" by John Perkins is more than a book, it is also a poem. Every page is lucid and concise. There is no pretension in the way this book is written. The sole purpose of the book is to inform and enlighten. The magic of this book lies in the complexity of human nature and the simplicity of what we all are searching for. "To the Ends of the Earth" is about life in the raw, as it was for all of our ancestors and still is for some. Mr. Perkins has collected the photographs, from the Archives of the Museum of Natural History in New York, taken by the explorers of the Arctic, Congo, Gobi, and Siberia. Therefore, each page of text is accompanied by a photograph that serves as a window into the heart of the jungle/desert/tundra of the most untamed areas of the world. When reading this book one is transported to a different time and place, and one feels part of something real. Although it is about simple people, this book questions the fundaments of the human struggle on a cosmic level, so frequently overlooked in the world we live in today.
