First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm "Ultra High Fidelity Long Play" (monaural) vinyl record, Dot DLP 3098, mint vinyl in an original Dot paper inner sleeve in a very-good-plus cardboard jacket. Anyone who ever caught an episode of TV's "My Little Margie" or "The Gale Storm Show" (with Zasu Pitts!) doubtless knows Gale Storm (1922-2009, born in South Texas as Josephine Owaissa Cottle, a pretty contract player for low-budget Monogram Pictures who migrated to television in the fifties) was cute and spunky. Her career as a vocalist is somewhat more puzzling. She managed to sell a million copies of her first single, a cover of Smiley Lewis' "I Hear You Knockin'." Here she also offers "Memories Are Made of This," a cover of Gloria Mann's "A Teenage Prayer," her cover of Frankie Lymon's "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," etc. But while she sings cheerfully and on key, her "plain vanilla" offerings sustained a recording career that lasted only a couple of years. Somehow one suspects the wrong producer was in the room, looking for something bland enough for the "all ages" 1950s TV audience. It might not have worked, but surely Sam Phillips or the Chess Brothers would have asked, "Honey, do any of these numbers MEAN anything to you? Might we loosen things up a little with a modest dose of your drug of choice? Just once, can we hear you rub up against that microphone stand and growl?" But no one did, and it just ain't rock 'n roll. Sorry Josephine. Appreciate your coming in for the audition. Reduced from $24.
