Cloth with dust jacket. a These volumes by Charles Sterling offer an overview of the pictorial production in Paris over two centuries (1300-1500). The capital of France was then both: a centre of intense spiritual and artistic life and a city shaken by riots, ravaged by epidemics, famines and war. However, it did not cease to shine as a focus of painting. A home that was important not only for France but for the whole of Europe. The second volume is devoted to the art of painting in Paris in the 15th century. Several tapestries and stained glass windows are added to the study of this active period, extending from the reign of Charles VII to that of Louis XII.Includes:ISBN vol. 1: 9782850470028ISBN vol. 2: 9782850471629.Charles Sterling ( 1901-1991)Esteemed Louvre curator Charles Sterling was born in Warsaw in 1901, and moved to France in 1925. Although trained as a lawyer, he began studying art history with Medievalist art historian Henri Focillon in Paris. Focillon became Sterling's mentor, and his photograph was ever present in Sterling's study. In 1929, he was offered a position at the Louvre in the paintings department. As curator, he organized exhibitions, oversaw the painting collection, and authored numerous catalogues, including French Realist Painters of the 17th Century (1934), Rubens and His Times (1936), and French Art Masterpieces (1937). Sterling was not independently wealthy, as were many curators at the time, rather he lived off money earned from his beautifully written catalogues. He combined the roles of connoisseur and historian, not only of art but also of social, political, and economic issues, and became a brilliant writer, all the more notable since he was twenty years old by the time he learned French.

The catalogue and analysis of the complete ?uvre of Théodore Géricault (1791?1824) required no less than seven volumes, including one dedicated to the Radeau de la Méduse and the monomanes. Attracted to dramatic representations, Géricault is often considered one of the first Romantic painters. However, his striking depictions of tragic events also make him a precursor of Realism.Volume IL'Homme: biographie, témoignages et documents. 1987. 231 pages. 8 color plates. 186 black & white figures.Volume IIL'?uvre: période de formation1987. 525 pages. 11 color plates585 black & white figures.Volume IIILa Gloire de l'Empire et la Première Restauration. 1989. 265 pages13 color plates. 439 black and white figures.Volume IVLe Voyage en Italie1990. 332 pages. 15 color plates401 black and white figures.Volume VLe Retour à Paris, synthèse d'expériences plastiques1992. 332 pages. 17 color plates497 black & white figures. 17 color plates658 black & white figures.Includes ISBN nos. 978285047016597828504701899782850470332.9782850471537 978285047167497828504724739782884530316.

Cloth with dust jacket. The four-volume publication features 2,657 of Odilon Redon's paintings, pastels, watercolors, and drawings. Because Redon (1840?1916) rarely dated his work, the catalogues are organized thematically to instead highlight significant elements of the artist's ?uvre, and the reiteration of certain motifs. The first volume is dedicated to portraits and figures, while the second deals with myths, legends and Redon's overall interest in the fantastic. The third volume gathers Redon's still lives and bouquets, as well as his landscapes and marinescapes. The fourth and last volume features Redon's sketchbooks and design projects such as paravents, screens, tapisseries, or murals.Text, research and documentation: Agnès Lacau St Guily and Marie-Christine Decroocq.Volume I: Portraits et Figures1992. 342 pages. 29 color plates729 black & white figures.Volume II: Mythes et Légendes. 1994384 pages. 71 color plates.606 black & white figures.Volume III: Fleurs et Paysages.1994. 384 pages. 103 color plates627 black & white figures,Volume IV: Études et Grandes Décorations, Supplément. 1998.433 pages. 60 color plates.698 black & white figures.Includes ISBNs 9782908063073;l 9782908063110; 97829080631279782908063134.
