The cover is full-colour gloss and laminated, with some creases across the cover. There is a small brown mark at the bottom of the cover inside. Also the back end paper has been written on a little. ## ## This wonderful book of whodunits will appeal to all historical detectives who find the darker corners of the past a happy hunting ground.## ## Who was Elizabeth I's true father? Who murdered the princes in the Tower? Did Buckingham poison James I? And who was the Man in the Iron Mask?## ## These, and a host of other compelling mysteries that have caused speculation and scandal down the centuries, are explored in Hugh Ross Williamson's hugely enjoyable book. Shattering myths and propaganda, he exposes a grisly catalogue of murder, lies, intrigue and conspiracies. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. ### Something of Myself by Rudyard Kipling 1981 ### ## THIS BOOK: Classified as VERY GOOD: This copy is the 1985 edition, first published by Macmillan in 1937, first published on Penguin Books 1977, reprinted 1981. Minor bumping and shelf wear; pretty sure this book has not been read, maybe just skimmed as the spine is still quite tight. ## ## Despite his reluctance to reveal anything about himself, Kipling did leave a personal memoir in Something of Myself. Mainly an account of his work, and the moods in which he approached it at various periods in his life, this charming and humorous vignette nevertheless provides an important element in our picture of the man. It is informative and descriptive, giving a profile of the travels, the friendships and the views of a man who, in his lifetime, was one of the most widely read of all writers. He was Britain's first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907, and his work is now enjoying renewed critical interest and a powerful revival among a new generation of readers. The cover shows a detail from a lithograph portrait of Rudyard Kipling by William Nicholson, reproduced by kind permission of the Kipling Society, London (photo Thames and Hudson) ## ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS? ----- PLEASE contact me for a shipping quotation. No Jacket. ### BEOWULF by Michael Alexander - 1973 ### ## THIS BOOK: Classified as VERY GOOD: This copy is the 1973 edition; I am sure this book has not been read at all, maybe just skimmed through as the spine is still quite tight. ## ## MICHAEL ALEXANDER: Beowulf is the most important Old English poem and perhaps the most significant single survival from the Anglo-Saxon period. However, its composition was completed in England in the eighth century. The poem is set in the heroic societies of fifth-century Scandinavia. Against this background of feuding and feasting, the hero Beowulf kills Grendel and Grendel's mother but killing the Dragon is himself killed ## We have here something more than merely a heroic poem of historical interest: Beowulf has a genuinely epic quality and scope, and this new verse translation successfully communicates the poem's artistry and eloquences ## ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS? ----- PLEASE contact me for a shipping quotation. Softcover Printed Full Colour. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. ## AS YOU LIKE IT by William Shakespeare 2005 ## ## ## THIS BOOK: This book is classified: as Near Fine: This is the 2005 edition: First time published in 1968, reissued in the Penguin Shakespeare Series 2005. As usual, the page edges are slightly discoloured because of the paper's age and quality; minor bumping. There is no age for this book ? it is a brilliant, classic for everybody. ## ## As You Like It is a pastoral comedy by William Shakespeare believed to have been written in 1599 and first published in the First Folio in 1623. The play's first performance is uncertain, though a performance at Wilton House in 1603 has been suggested as a possibility.## ## Its heroine Rosalind flees persecution in her uncle's court, accompanied by her cousin Celia, to find safety and love in the Forest of Arden. In the forest, they encounter a variety of memorable characters, notably the melancholy traveller Jaques, who speaks many of Shakespeare's most famous speeches (such as "All the world's a stage", "too much of a good thing" and "A fool! A fool! I met a fool in the forest"). Jaques contrasts sharply with the other characters in the play, always observing and disputing the hardships of life in the country. ## ## Historically, critical response has varied, with some critics finding the play a work of great merit and some finding it to be of lesser quality than other Shakespearean works. The play has been adapted for radio, film, and musical theatre. ## ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY. PLEASE, contact me for a shipping quotation. ###. Softcover Printed Full Colour. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. ## A PASSAGE TO INDIA by E M Forester 1985. A Penguin Modern Classic ## ## ## THIS BOOK: This book is classified: as VERY GOOD: This is the 1985 edition: First published by Edward Arnold in 1924, published in Penguin Books 1936, and reprinted from 1936 to 1960 thirteen times, reissued in Penguin Modern Classics in 1961, from 1962 to 1985, reprinted with different edition Thirtyone times. As usual, the page edges are slightly discoloured because of the paper's age and quality; minor bumping. The cover shows Indore, Central India, from a drawing by William Simpson in India. There are twenty-one chapters. A brilliant modern classic for everybody. ## ## British school mistress Adela Quested and her elderly friend, Mrs Moore, visit the fictional Indian city of Chandrapore. Adela is to decide if she wants to marry Mrs Moore's son, Ronny Heaslop, the city magistrate. Meanwhile, Dr Aziz, a young Indian Muslim physician, is called from dining with friends by Major Callendar, Aziz's superior at the hospital, but is delayed. Disconsolate at finding him gone, Aziz immediately walks back and enters his favourite mosque. Seeing Mrs Moore there, he yells at her not to profane this sacred place, but the two then chat and part as friends. When Mrs Moore relates her experience later, Ronny becomes indignant at the native's presumption. ## ## Because the newcomers had expressed a desire to meet Indians, Mr Turton, the city tax collector, invites several to his house. Still, the party turns out awkwardly due to the Indians' timidity and the Britons' bigotry. Also, there is Cyril Fielding, principal of Chandrapore's government-run college for Indians, who invites Adela and Mrs Moore to a tea party with him and a Hindu-Brahmin professor named Narayan Godbole. At Adela's request, he extends his invitation to Dr Aziz. ## ## At the party, Fielding and Aziz become friends, and Aziz promises to take Mrs Moore and Adela to see the distant Marabar Caves. Ronny arrives and, finding Adela "unaccompanied" with Dr Aziz and Professor Godbole, rudely breaks up the party. ## ## Aziz mistakenly believes that the women are offended that he has not followed through on his promise and arranges an outing to the caves at great expense to himself. Fielding and Godbole are supposed to accompany the expedition, but they miss the train. In the first cave they visit, Mrs Moore is overcome with claustrophobia and disturbed by the echo. When she declines to continue, Adela and Aziz climb the hill to the upper caves, accompanied by a guide. ## ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY. "This famed Payne edition of Select Works of Edmund Burke is universally revered by students of English history and political thought. Volume 1 contains Burke's brilliant defense of the American colonists' complaints of British policy, including "Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents" (1770), "Speech on American Taxation" (1774), and "Speech on Conciliation" (1775). Volume 2 consists of Burke's renowned Reflections on the Revolution in France. Volume 3 presents Burke's Four Letters on the Proposals for Peace with the Regicide Directory of France -- generally styled Letters on a Regicide Peace (1795-1796). The Letters, Payne believed, deserve to "rank even before [Burke's] Reflections, and to be called the writer's masterpiece." ; Penguin Classics; 0.94 x 7.72 x 5.04 Inches; 398 pages.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Penguin Red Classic Edition. Paperback. Maigret in Court. Translated by Robert Brain. A woman and her child have been brutally murdered in their flat: the woman's throat slit, and the child smothered by silk cushions. Standing accused is the victim's nephew, a quiet picture-framer from the outskirrs of Paris. The violence of the crime stands in stark contrast to his gentle nature, but Meurant was glimpsed fleeing from the scene, and a suit is found bearing traces of human blood. Yet Maigret can't reconcile the violent portrait the court is painting with the man his invesgitations have revealed. Is Meurant guilty of this shocking crime, or, as Maigret fears, are the wheels of justice about to destroy an innocent man? 126 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences.
