Trade paperback. Condition: Very good. James H. Farmer (illustrator). First Printing [Stated]. viii, 112 pages. Illustrations. Bibliography. St. Clair Streett (October 6, 1893 - September 28, 1970), known as "Bill", was a United States Air Force (USAF) major general and writer who first organized and led the Strategic Air Command (SAC). Streett served as aide to General Billy Mitchell, and was viewed by General of the Air Force Henry H. Arnold as his "troubleshooter". Streett served in France during World War I. In 1920, he was awarded the Mackay Trophy and the Distinguished Flying Cross for leading a squadron of U.S. airmen on a pioneering air voyage from New York City to Nome, Alaska and back. Streett wrote for National Geographic of his squadron's difficulties. Streett assisted Mitchell during the famous bombing demonstration against battleships. He made an exploratory flight to extreme altitude during which he experienced frozen flight controls, and then wrote a story about the adventure for Popular Science Book details the U.S. Army 1920 New York to Nome, Alaska, flight, which was one of the most daring aviation adventures that took place in the summer of 1920. Eight daredevil U.S. Army Air Service fliers made the historic flight from Long Island, New York, to the barren coast on the Bearing Sea and the famous Alaskan gold mining camp. The round trip distance approximated 9,000 miles, much of it over uncharted country. The flight, involved four modified World War I vintage deHavilland DH-4B bombers, and was inspired by Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell, then assistant chief of the Army Air Service, who had spent some time in the wild Alaskan territory in the early 1900s. The flight, if successful, would help to establish an effective aerial route to Alaska and on to Asia. In all it took three months to make the round trip, with 112 actual flying hours. Each leg of the trip is detailed and is accompanied by surviving photographs of the journey.

Signed with sentiment by author on fep. DJ has slight wear and soiling and some sticker residue on the back. The author was the West Coast correspondent for Ski Magazine. In 1964 she won the William B. Berry ski writing award. In 1968 she won the national Harold Hirsch United States aware for 'excellence in ski journalism". In 1969 she was one of only 14 working journalists to receive their study fellowship at the Edward R. Murrow Center in the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. In 1991 she one her second Hirsch Ski Journalism Award and in 1992 she won the North American Travel Journalists Association first place for magazine sports' story writing. The author had a decade of friendship with Gretchen Fraser and committed to writing her story shortly after her death. Gretchen Kunigk Fraser (February 11, 1919 - February 17, 1994) was an alpine ski racer. She was the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in skiing. She was also the skiing stand-in for ice skater Sonja Henie in the movies Thin Ice (1937) and Sun Valley Serenade (1941). Gretchen Kunigk was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1919. She was the daughter of German and Norwegian immigrants, Willibald and Clara Kunigk. Her Norwegian-born mother was a skier and Gretchen first skied at age 13, at Paradise Valley on the south slopes of Mount Rainier in December 1932. Under the tutelage of Otto Lang she became a proficient ski racer and later competed on the ski team at the University of Puget Sound. In 1938, she traveled to Sun Valley to compete in the second Harriman Cup, a new international event featuring the best racers in the world. She met 1936 Olympian and Northwest ski champion Donald Fraser (1913-1994) of the University of Washington on the train trip to central Idaho. They were married in November, 1939 . Sun Valley became their home. Both Frasers were members of the 1940 Olympic team, games that were canceled due to World War II. She spent the war years skiing in Otto Lang's military training films and helping to rehabilitate wounded and disabled veterans through skiing, setting the stage for a lifelong commitment to working with disabled skiers. After the war, Fraser got her chance to compete in Alpine skiing at the Winter Olympics. A week before her 29th birthday, she won the gold medal in the women's slalom and a silver medal in the women's combined event at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Following the Olympics, Fraser became a mother and an ambassador for Sun Valley and skiing in general. Later in life she was a mentor to aspiring female ski racers at Sun Valley, including Susie Corrock, Christin Cooper, Picabo Street, and disabled skier Muffy Davis.

In the 48 years that Tom Walker has resided in Alaska, he has worked as a conservation officer, wilderness guide, wildlife technician, log home builder, documentary film advisor, and adjunct professor of journalism at the Homer Branch, University of Alaska, Anchorage. Tom Walker, a full-time freelance writer and photographer specializing in natural history and wildlife, is regarded as one of Alaska's premier nature photographers. His publication credits include Alaska Magazine, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, Newsweek, Audubon, Sierra, Natural History, National Wildlife, Ranger Rick Magazine, Wilderness, numerous national, local, and international publications. Walker's books include: KANTISHNA MUSHERS, MINERS, MOUNTAINEERS; BUILDING THE ALASKA LOG HOME; SHADOWS ON THE TUNDRA; DENALI JOURNAL; WILD CRITTERS; RIVER OF BEARS; ALASKA'S WILDLIFE; PORTRAIT OF ALASKA'S WILDLIFE; ALASKA'S MAMMALS; ALASKA'S BEARS; and CARIBOU:WANDERER OF THE TUNDRA, which won the 2000 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BOOK AWARD in the category of Nature and Environment. His new book, THE SEVENTYMILE KID, was published in 2013 and won the coveted Alaska Historian of the Year award. Many of Walker's photographs have won local, national, and international competitions. In the aftermath of the 1898 Klondike gold rush, hardy pioneers forged through trackless wilderness on foot or by dog team to prospect every remote drainage in Interior Alaska. A chance discovery of gold in the Kantishna hills in 1905 sparked a wild stampede for riches. The rush to the Mt. McKinley region lured hundreds of people. The Kantishna is rife with stories of courage, loyalty and challenges met head-on. Bouts with wild beasts, isolation, disease, accidents and cosmic cold. Here to are darker tales.of armed robbery, attempted murder, suicide and insanity. Market hunters slaughtered the wildlife. Unscrupulous trappers poisoned animals for their fur. Mt. McKinley drew adventurers of another sort. For a decade a few eastern sportsmen and sourdoughs challenged the icy slopes. The stories of defeat and deception set the stage in 1913 for the ultimate triumph. Out of the detritus of the great Alaska/Yukon gold rushes emerged two men of a different stripe. Men of adventure and vision, rising above the lust for gold, proposed a national park where wildlife would be free of the epic slaughter that accompanied America s northern expansion. Carving a national park out of this wilderness would not be easy. Alaskans would fight to protect their way of life. Here are the stories of these tough pioneers, tales similar to those that inspired Robert Service and Jack London.only these stories are true.

Illustrated cover. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. Index. Cover has some wear and soiling. Author inscription on the half-title page. Inscription reads To Lara Henry Baker with Best Wishes JHC Anchorage, AK 13 Aug 05. John Haile Cloe, whose encyclopedic knowledge of the military history of Alaska made him the leading expert on World War II in Alaska. Cloe was a student at the Virginia Military Institute prior to joining the Army. He served two tours in Vietnam and was later assigned to the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1970 he became the Alaska Air Command historian at Elmendorf Air Force Base. His office at Elmendorf contained copious and detailed records of U.S. military actions in Alaska during World War II, when Japan bombed, invaded and occupied parts of the Aleutian Islands, as well as records of the Cold War era. In retirement, he used knowledge he'd acquired on base and information gleaned from repositories outside Alaska to produce fastidious research on the Alaska front. He led tours to Attu Island, the site of the only land battle between American forces and an invading army since the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. Cloe worked with the National Park Service to preserve the history of Alaska's war years. He completed the first major history of the Battle of the Kurils, a long-running air and sea assault on northern Japan that followed the Battle of Attu. "Mission to the Kurils" was the result of nearly 30 years of research and writing, and constitutes Part II (per vi)--each work stands alone as complete. . This was the personal copy of Dr. Lara H. Baker who held leadership positions at Los Alamos National Laboratory and in the private sector. Lara earned his P.D. from New Mexico State University in 1968, showcasing his commitment to lifelong learning and intellectual pursuits. He was renowned for his expertise in computers. And his work was featured on 60 Minutes. He always worked to celebrate the greatness of our country. No one was more greatly committed to the cause and purpose of this country than Dr. Lara Baker. The Aleutian Campaign occurred during the early years of the war. What was accomplished there has been obscured by time and overshadowed by the more dramatic events of other war theaters. It was the only campaign fought on North American soil during the war. It was primarily an air war where young men battled not only each other, but also the terrible, unforgiving elements of the stormed-tossed, primeval place. The war in the Aleutians has been referred to as the forgotten war, and the terror of the air battles that were fought in the lonely skies unfortunately have not summoned up the power and the glory of other theaters of conflict as so recently expressed in the movie Memphis Belle. However, those who fought there remember. -- Back cover. The Eleventh Air Force (11 AF) is a Numbered Air Force of the United States Air Force Pacific Air Forces (PACAF). It is headquartered at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Established on 28 December 1941 as the Alaskan Air Force at Elmendorf Field, Alaska Territory. it was initially part of the United States Army Air Forces. It provided air defense of Alaska during World War II and fought in the Aleutian Islands Campaign. It was re-designated as the Alaskan Air Command in late 1945, and became responsible for the air defense of Alaska. Throughout the winter of 1942-1943, the Eleventh Air Force bombed Kiska and Attu whenever possible, although the flyers were extremely handicapped by the almost constant fog which covered the island. At the same time, the bases to the east of Adak were consolidated and built up. In October, the Field Headquarters of the Eleventh Air Force was closed at Kodiak and moved to Davis AAF. A Patrol Wing (PatWing) was a United States Navy aviation unit with the commander of a Patrol Wing known as the Commodore, the ComPatWing or COMPATWING. From 1 November 1942 to 30 June 1973 Patrol Wings were designated "Fleet Air Wings". Fleet Air Wing 4 was established as Patrol Wing 4 at FAB Seattle, Washington (NAS Sand Point, Washington) on 1 October 1937. On 27 May it relocated to NAS Kodiak, Alaska where on 1 November 1942 it was redesignated Fleet Air Wing 4 (FAW-4). On 15 March 1943 it relocated to NAS Adak, Alaska then on 26 April 1944 to NAF Attu, Aleutian Islands. The wing fought in the Aleutian Islands campaign alongside Eleventh Air Force. During the winter of 1943-44, the burden of operations against the Kuriles was carried by Navy Consolidated PBY Catalinas and Lockheed Ventura of Fleet Air Wing Four. They carried small bomb loads and their primary objective was the securing of nighttime reconnaissance photographs. On 17 April 1949 the wing relocated to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington and became dual hatted with Commander Fleet Air (COMFAIR) Seattle with additional duty as FAW-4 in May 1949. On 15 February 1954 COMFAIR Seattle was redesignated COMFAIR Whidbey and FAW-4 (dual hatted). Fleet Air Wing 4 was disestablished on 15 March 1970.
