Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. Reissue. 283 pages. Twenty Years at Hull House" is the story of the Hull House settlement by its founder Jane Addams. The settlement movement, which gained popularity first in London at the end of the 19th century, soon spread to the United States and was principally involved in improving the lives of the urban poor by providing opportunities for higher education and essential social services. Hull House, one of the most famous of the "settlement houses", was located in the Near West Side community area of Chicago and was run by Jane Addams until her death in 1935. "Twenty Years at Hull House" is an important narrative of the settlement movement in the United States, which contributed significantly to the advancement of poor and working class peoples.

[About the author] Texas poet and historian GEORGIA EARNEST KLIPPLE has shaped a life with the richness of Coastal Bend soil and the sweep of a Pecos horizon. Her father a journalist, her mother an educator, Klipple developed early her abiding love of language, history, and teaching. After earning her master's degree in English at the University of Texas, she taught there and at Del Mar College. She wrote for Dr. Walter Prescott Webb's Handbook of Texas and for twenty years was the only woman on the editorial staff of The Texas Observer. She has published stories and articles in True West, Texas Outlook, Ford Times, Mexican World, and others. She never, however, strayed far from her poetry, winning prizes including the statewide Voertman Award and the national Agnes C. Brothers Significant Poetry Contest. The Poetry Society of Texas has featured her poems in their Book of the Year; Prairie Press Books published her first book of poems, Commencement Address, and she has self-published three books of her verse, Nowhere is an Old Country, Fast Food on a Saturday Night, and The Mill of Rosamondeville. She is active in and has been president of the Austin Poetry Society and the Austin Kwill Klub. Mrs. Klipple, whose favorite sport is swimming, has traveled in Europe and Mexico as well as the United States. She and her husband, Philip, live in Austin. They have one child, Karen Crouch, and two grandchildren, Ernest and Daphne Crouch. Inscribed by Author(s).
