Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Reynolds Stone (illustrator). First U.S. edition. This book is an interesting companion piece to Waugh's 1950 fictional biography of the third century St Helena, and was later collected in the 2003 volume "Waugh Abroad: Collected Travel Writing". Edition limited to 1,000 copies, 50 of which were signed by author and artist and bound in leather. This is number 458 of the 950 regular copies. Frontispiece engraving, and title, printed in brown. Three additional wood engravings printed in brown, as are the initial letters. The book was printed at the Queen Anne Press in London and this copy is described as the edition "for the United States of America". Edges are slightly browned, otherwise a fine copy in very good, price-clipped dust jacket with minor edgewear and one two inch closed tear to base of front panel.
