Quarto, contemporary polished russia gilt extra and blind tooled, joints broken and covers coming loose, worn, spine ends chipped removing most of top and bottom panel, frontispiece and title lightly foxed and two other full page engraved plates by Flaxman, internally fine. Edited by William Hayley, who completed the work after Cowper's death, this was Cowper's final great work. When his last decline overtook him, he was at work on the extensive commentary, which is here printed as he left it. NCBEL 11, 658. The first edition of Cowper's translation. Because this is a heavy item, extra postage may be required, with the exact amount depending upon the destination of the parcel.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First edition. Small square quarto. Approximately 6" x 7". [100]pp. A volume of 504 portraits on 56 mounted albumen photographs, nine to a page. Re-spined in quarter cloth with original leather boards titled in gilt, and later paper title label on the spine. Considerable erosion on the boards, small chip on the front fly, a good copy. Claflin (1817-1897) was a photographer who operated several studios around Worcester from the 1850's to the 1890's. Black was a prominent Boston photographer best-known for his famous portraits of John Brown taken the same year as the raid on Harper Ferry and his 1860 photograph of Boston taken from a balloon, which was the first aerial photograph taken in American. A nice collection of images.

Quarto, original Irish binding of red morocco gilt, all edges gilt, by George Mullen of Dublin, newly and expertly rebacked by master binder Philip Dusel, and preserving original spine, bookplates of the Archbishop of Cashel and of John Sparrow, neat inscription on fly-leaf, very fine and complete with the half title and the three full-page Flaxman engravings. This exceptionally large copy has some uncut edges and probably is the finest copy available.Edited by William Hayley, this translation was William Cowper's final great work.
