Sherman's devastating sweep through Georgia and the Carolinas in the closing days ofthe Civil War. In Sherman s March, Burke Davis has woven together hundreds of eyewitness stories~graphically bringing to life the dramatic experiences of the 65,000 Federal troops who plundered their way through a Confederacy already reeling, but still combative, as well as the plight of the civilians who stood in the army's path and who suffered the looting, burning, and rapine incident to the march. These anguished~and often defiant~accounts describe scenes of wanton destruction as Confederate women tried to hide their daughters as well as their family treasures and livestock, usually in vain. Here too are tales of Federal kindness and heroism in protecting civilians from harm; the pathetic stories of massacred Federal prisoners; burned hospitals, villages, and homes; and of rape~one of the few times in the Civil War when both sides acknowledged and documented its existence. The march was also touched with controversy of another kind. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton clashed with Sherman over the treatment of slaves~the first actual application of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation Act~even going so far as to question those freed about their relationship with the general. Dominating the pages of Sherman s March is the thin, very wrinkled, asthmatic forty four~year~old figure of the general himself, "Uncle Billy" to his troops, to Southerners the devil incarnate~who, in a letter to a friend written shortly after the march, eloquently summed up the horror of war: "I confess, without shame, I am sick and tired of fighting; even success the most brilliant is over dead and mangled bodies, with the anguish and lamentations of distant families, appealing to me for their sons, husbands and fathers. It is only those who have never heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded and lacerated (friend or foe) that cry aloud for more blood, more vengeance, more desolution . ''. No one would count the charred chimneys that marked their route~"Sherman's Sentinels" of the burnt country; the toll of ruin, perhaps as much as one billion dollars, would never be totted up. In its passage the army had left the ruins of plantation life. For the first~and last~time in American history a vast region was sacked and plundered: and war was taken to women and children. For five months Sherman's army devastated the middle South. It took three state capitals (and burned one of them), brushed aside one large Confederate army and severely mauled another in pitched battle~a long foray which was both a retribution and a deathblow to rebellion, and which left a profound effect on American history.
