Hard cover in protected dust wrapper, quarto, 134pp, b&w illustrations and some photos. Edges of dw and boards worm some light foxing on early and late pages; a good copy. In 1879 the Oreint Line steamship s.s. Orient pioneered a new shipping route from England to Australia - outward bound on the 'cool weather route' the Orient travelled via the Cape of Good Hope, and on the return journey she cut days from the voyage by passing through the Suez Canal, which had been opened to shipping in 1869. The Orient was designed specifically for the Australian passenger trade, She was a full-powered stamship of 5000 tons, one of the largest ships afloat. She could cover the distance of 19000 km in less than 40 days. The comfort of passengeres was paramount. Later, the Orient saw military service in the Boer War as a troopship, taking men, horses and equipment to South Africa.
