Condition: Very good. First Edition. First edition; 14 x 9 3/4; pp. 1-60; lithographed wraps in a beautiful Art Nouveau style, tied with a decorative string; illustrated with black and white cartoons; a few minor nicks to edges of wraps and small creases to tips of spine and corners; in very good or better condition. In the early 20th century, with the growing success of mail-rder businesses and large department stores, smaller cities and towns were faced with the expanding problem of people "buying outside," instead of "at home." George Roberts of the Roberts-Bailey Company of Chicago, publisher of the Community Builder journal, was a strong believer in the great role of newspapers conducting "buy-at-home" campaigns as a solution. The company established a dedicated "Home Products" cartoon-and-editorial service to meet the demand for community advertising for civic and commercial organizations. The current book offered numerous editorials, customizable with the specific business' information, and cartoons, by artist De Witt A. Patterson, to be run in "local papers." The full service was to include 60 illustrations and editorial talks. Not in OCLC, not in the trade (as of January 2021).

Inscription in neat ink script on front free endpaper: "James Pollard's Book Presented by George Turner in 1803." Contemporary pale grey boards, rebacked. Very Good. Puglia's introduction anticipates his critics who, he says, express "the expiring rage of conquered Anti-federalism." He defends America's Federal system, contrasting it with the "aspiring tyranny" of the French Revolution; celebrates America's built-in restraints against mobbery and despotism; and argues that the reins of government must be controlled by men of moderation under a system of "rational liberty" that recognizes that civil society is necessary for nurturing the rule of law and the equal rights of all. Puglia concludes with a section entitled, "The Author to His Enemies, If He Has Any." FIRST EDITION. Evans 29373. Sabin 66617. ESTC W20315. Not in Cohen, Harv. Law Cat., Larned.
