Hardcover. viii, 336p., illustrations as called for with the b&w plates on inserted coated stock, hardbound in 8.5x5.5 inch dark green cloth boards spine-titled gilt. Generally quite good: spine lettering a little dimmed from handling, endsheet bears a neat small pencilled note where purchased, a sound clean copy. The contents are not unworthy of Dian Fossey/Jane Goodall insights, however limited; observations took place in Tenerife (Spanish-owned island that geographically is Africa) during and following World War I.

James Davison Hunter was the Labrosse-Levinson Distinguished Professor of Religion, Culture, and Social Theory at the University of Virginia and Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture. Peter Berger was one of the preeminent sociologists of the twentieth century. His highly creative and controversial writing has made a distinct impact not only in sociology but in such disciplines as political science, public policy, history, religious studies, and theology. Each of the four sections of this book--Social Theory; Modernization; Religion; and The Method and Vocation of Sociology--contains essays which examine Berger's efforts in the light of these broader issues and assess the degree to which Berger succeeds or fails in his efforts. The book includes a contribution from Berger himself, responding to the preceding essays as well as presenting his own appraisal of the future of interpretive sociology. Making Sense of Modern Times shows how Peter Berger struggles with the classical legacy of the sociological enterprise - a legacy largely abandoned by contemporary sociology. Berger makes a self-conscious effort to recover this vision. Each of the four sections of the book - Social Theory: Modernization; Religion; The Method and Vocation of Sociology - contains essays which examine Berger's efforts in the light of these broader issues and assess the degree to which Berger succeeds of fails in his efforts. Octavos (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's blue and green cloth with silver and gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jackets. Translated by P H Clarke. (Luis: 1026) First American edition. of Attack And Defence in Action and second British edition of Pieces and Pawns in Action. While strategy deals with general planning, tactics may be said to cover the individual operation by which plans are executed. Pachman divides tactics into its elements: moves, maneuvers, combinations. He then examines the characteristics of the various pieces, showing the situations in which each is at its best. The mail part of Attack And Defence in Action describes the tactical action of the pieces both in a positive sense, as they increased their effectiveness and in a negative sense as they restrict the opponent's pieces. Pachman demonstrates how these methods lead to advantageous and positional changes, and the book concludes with a chapter on pawns and their uses. In Attack And Defence in Action, the author analyses the most complicated tactical problems: attack and defence, the fight for time and space during a game, the psychological elements of chess and the problems arising from creative fantasy in a game. The text is illustrated by extracts from practical play. Condition: Previous owner's name to front end papers. Pieces and Pawns in Action' jacket with light edge wear spine ends rubbed and lightly chipped, hinges rubbed.
