4to. (8), 279, (1 blank) pp. Red cloth, with title on front board and on spine. Beautifully illustrated handbook on Aramco and Saudi Arabia for Aramco employees. - "The Aramco Handbook was originated to fill the void in comprehensive texts written in English about the Middle East. Employees of the Arabian American Oil Company coming to Saudi Arabia from abroad, principally Americans, needed reliable and fairly detailed knowledge of the kingdom. In order to describe the Aramco venture in perspective, an unusual range of topics must be covered in the pages of this handbook: the history, culture, geography, geography, religion and economic development of Saudi Arabia; the fundamentals of the oil industry; Aramco's early history and its present operations" (introduction). It was first published in 1950 in five spiral-bound booklets. - A very good copy.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original colour illustrated wraps 22 x 28cm. vi + 59 + (2) + 59 + 6pp in English and Arabic, illustrated in colour and b/w throughout. Dated 15 April 1954 to Aramco Chair F.A. Davies' Foreword. Covers very good, rubbed and worn along the spine. Interiors near fine. This significant edition opens by marking the passing of King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud on 9 Nov 1953, which "all employees of the Company joined in mourning". There is also a poem in Arabic to the centre pages. Davies is encouraged by King Saud's "keen interest" in the company, which led it to increase wages for all Saudi employees by 12-20% effective from 1 Jan 1954, and improve benefits in education, housing, food, clothing and vacations. Davies offers "renewed assurance" to the new King and the Saudi people that Aramco "will continue the development of the oil resources of the Kingdom along sound engineering and business principles, and in a manner that will contribute to the best interests of all concerned" (pp2-3). The report also celebrates 20 years of growth and achievement with an article describing significant events since signing the Concession in 1933. The main chapters cover oil operations (exploration, drilling, producing, oil and gas, plants and pipeline, refining, marketing, engineering, transport etc); people (wages, housing, recreation, safety, The Oil Caravan magazine, employees with long service, thrift plans, manpower); health; industrial training; and community, industrial and agricultural development (new towns, and the Railway the management and supervision of which Aramco transferred to the Government on 1 Jan 1953). Detailed full-page colour maps illustrate exploration, oil fields and installations, the route from field storage to Dammam, Bahrain and beyond, and marketing via bulk plants and retail dealers. The photos include royal portraits, and show Saudi people, landscapes, and diverse operations.

Printed map on canvas, 985 x 655 mm. Scale 1:500,000. Copy no. 1520. Originally published in 1950; revised 1953. A pilot's personal map of the Empty Quarter across the border of the future United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, marked "Confidential Material" and carefully annotated in pencil by the Aramco pilot R. F. Morris. - Morris had once flown one of Aramco's first transatlantic flights in a DC-3 from Texas on a long route to Saudi Arabia, and later became manager of the Aramco Aviation Department; he was quoted in a 1967 Aramco World article, discussing the difficulties of flying over this very landscape: "Flying in most of Saudi Arabia is like flying anywhere, but when you get down there, there's nothing. You'll fly for hours without seeing a living thing: man, beast or vegetation. No roads or railways, no lakes or streams, no woods, no villages. Just great stretches of sand or gravel between the rolling dunes or occasional limestone hills and escarpments". - Despite the hardship, Morris's pencil notes show an intimate knowledge of the desert landscape, and one which Aramco was particularly eager to map. He notes helpful landmarks (and some dead reckoning), but also the landscape of the oil explorations below: a truck route, a tanker, an "oil line." An X marks where "Equip moves here today" and a particular feature of oil company flying: an "oil strip", or a DIY landing strip marked with oil. Another pilot quoted in Aramco World alongside Murray describes this: "All you need is a bare expanse of gravel floor with a stretch marked out with a streak of oil, four barrels, or four flares at night and presto, there's an airstrip". - The map was made while Aramco was attempting a series of wildcat oil strikes in Rub Al Khali, but the largest discoveries, made along the border with what would become the UAE, would not be made until the 1960s. - Gentle toning along creases. Remarkably well preserved, pencil notes very clear. - Will Tracy, "Fly the Desert Sky", in: Saudi Aramco World, Nov.-Dec. 1967, pp. 1-7.
