First Edition
Paperback. First Edition, so stated. Very Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a hint of wear to extremities; mildest rubbing. Binding square and secure; text clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 287pp. First Edition, so stated. Paperback Original. This British edition, published as a paperback original by Sceptre, was picked up, evidently, by Trafalgar Square at a later date. It was preceeded by the Crown edition in the USA, which was published in the previous year. Trade Paperback. Matthew Barber is a middle-aged, recently divorced man spiraling through midlife crisis. He reflects miserably on his past, loses himself in fantasies, and therefore fails to focus on reality and his potential to find happiness in the here and now. As a side job, he develops a persona, B.W. Beath, to use when writing his sarcastic, sharply insulting restaurant reviews for a local Boston periodical. Each chapter in the book provides scenes from Matthew's life in which he visits a restaurant, and concludes with B.W.'s review of the chapter's featured restaurant. As the novel progresses, however, the content of each review has less to do with the dining experience at hand, and has more to do with the self-imposed unraveling of Matthew's life. Toward the end, B.W. takes on more power in Matthew's personality - as he finds his way into the body of the chapters and he begins to interrupt Matthew's thinking and influences his decisions and actions. This book is a page-turner, comic and biting, humorous and harshly real. Eric Kraft has done it again - though this book has a much different flavor than his other Peter Leroy adventure stories, it is every bit as entertaining and enlightening.

In 1946, Italy became a democratic republic. But deep within the nation there lurked a forgotten curse: three major criminal brotherhoods, whose methods had been honed over a century of experience. As Italy grew, so did the mafias. Sicily's Cosa Nostra, the camorra from Naples and the mysterious 'ndrangheta from Calabria stood ready to enter the wealthiest and bloodiest period of their long history. Italy made itself rich by making scooters, cars and handbags. The mafias carved out their own route to wealth through tobacco smuggling, construction, kidnapping and narcotics. And as criminal business grew exponentially, the mafias became not just more powerful, but more closely linked. Today, the long shadow of the mafias still hangs over a nation wracked by debt, political paralysis, and widespread corruption. The latest investigations show that their reach is astonishing: they control much of Europe's wholesale cocaine trade, while representatives from as far away as Germany, Canada and Australia come to Calabria to seek authorisation for their affairs. Just when Italy thought it had finally contained the mafia threat, it is discovering that it harbours the most global criminal network of them all.
