Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Paperback Edition. Paperback. Very slight shelf wear to edge of cover. The material contained in this book grew largely our of extraordinary four day gathering held in Huddersfield at the beginning of January 1973. The event was sponsored by the Student Christian Movement in response to a widespread feeling among radical Christians that a re-examination of our faith - in the context of our more usually articulated political radicalism - was long overdue. The response to the event was an unusual one in that it was not primarily an intellectual response; the re-examination required was not so much a cerebral critique of theology or politics but a flesh and blood discovery of spiritual roots. It has proved impossible adequately to reflect in the form of this book the substance of the actual event itself. The experiences that could not have been planned and cannot be properly communicated were precisely those features that made the occasion extraordinary. Books are designed to communicate other (but not more important) aspects of our existence and we are therefore only able to pass on here some of what is available and possible to print. This we have collected into three sections. Firstly, the transcripts of the contributions of Alistair Kee, Dan Berrigan, Colin Winter and Jim Forest; secondly, something of the response at the tieme to the questions raised; and thirdly, reflections on the subject and the implications for any conceivable future. 120 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Uk Paperback Edition. Paperback. In The Shadow of the Galilean, the author produced a fresh approach to Jesus which was so enthusiastically received that it has been reprinted four times in three years. In his new book he shows that the same imaginative touch can be applied to the age-old genre of the sermon. In it he presents what he calls 'variations on biblical texts' which are characterized by the way in which they change the perspectives and motives with which familiar texts are approached and challenge traditional ways of understand the Bible. For him, the task of preaching is to prompt among hearers a dialogue among themselves and with God; it seeks to 'open a door' to a wider understanding of reality which takes into account the world as it has been discovered to be - with all its personal, political and universal dimensions. 191 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

The seventeenth-century Divine Samuel Rutherfurd wrote many letters to his friends and parishoners. They were collected after his death, and they reveal his humanity, his capacity for wide and varied friendship, a tender sympathy with the distressed and the bereaved, a great love of children and an urgent concern for the spiritual well-being of his parishioners. In this selection it has been the editor's aim to present what might be particularly interesting and helpful to present-day readers. 127 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).

In 1976 he wrote a simple, yet kaleidoscopic books about his experiences as a worker priest and about God, the church and the world, trying to describe both the glorious catholicity of human life 'from railway engines and high mass to literature and a good ale'. Now, after twenty years, he has written a kind of sequel. 118 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Then follow three essays on spiritualty: Rex Ambler 'Reasons for not despairing'; Terry Tastard SSF, 'Prayer in the belly of the beast'; Donald Evans 'Affirming all our humanity'. Then Brian Russell, Elisabeth Holditch and John Macdonald Smith discuss models fof God, with a particular focus on theodicy, cosmic purpose and the question 'Would God ever let a nuclear end happen'? Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Paperback Edition. Paperback. Slight foxing to end inside covers and edge. This book, is in the nature of a sequel to an earlier small book, A Glimpse of God, in which he sought to express a personal view of those experiences of faith and life that are the marks of Christian discipleship. His purpose in this book is 'to reflect more particularly upon the nature of the God whom I glimpse and by whom I find myself, sometimes to my surprise, encountered'. Many factors distort all our perceptions of God, but this fact of life should not discourage us from seeking throughout his world and within human experience. This sesnative and personal book will encourage each reader to reflect upon his own experience of the vitality and glory of God. 88 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Paperback Edition. Paperback. This book is for adults who have some influence with children, and especially those who are regularly in touch with them: parents, grandparents, teachers, clergy and friends. It is concerned with questions which need to be explored about how to understand the Christian faith and commend it to the next generation. At present, the author believes, many people are being crippled by inadequate notions of the Christian faith, which makes it difficult either to live it our or to impart credible beliefs to children. It is over this that she seeks to offer help. Here is no talking down, no suppressing questions, but an approach which attracts from the very first page. What Christians of all ages need rather naivety, the author also argues, is a kind of faithfuly openness to questioning. And above all, nothing short of the deepest sincerity will do. These are qualities which she herself shows here, and in addition to the wise advice she gives, her book is a delight to read. 194 pp.

Paperback. If there is any area of social concern in which the church may properly be expected to have something to say, marriage, the family and sexual relationships surely hold pride of place. Two out of three of all marriages in England still take place in church. However, the church's teaching on marriage has become increasingly problematical. its traditional doctrine that marriage is 'indissoluble' is plainly untrue in any literal sense: one out of every three marriages is in fact dissolved by process of law. That remarriage while the first partner is alive is inherently sinful is a position virtually impossible to reconcile with today's pastoral realities. The traditional ban on all sexual relationships outside marriage is respected by only a small number of church members and involves both them and the clergy in pretence rather than trust. And the position on homosexuality is an unhappy one. The author argues that if the church continues to teach rules and attitudes which have come to seem more like a relic of a former society than a serious contribution to the problems of family life today, there is a risk of such alienation of its teachers and ministers from the relaities of contemporary life that its very credibility will be impaired. it is an urgent matter to consider how far the church's traditional teaching is a correct interpretation of the Bible and of Christian theological insights. This book is written in non-technical language and is addressed to all who are seeking to bring their Christian faith to bear on questions of marriage, family and sexuality. 136 pp.

Paperback. This challenging book is essentially a reflection on the first three words of its title. What understanding can we have of God, and of what God was about in Christ, such that the church may celebrate it in its sense of form or worship, live it out individually and collectively, and put it into practice? Who are we, and what are the activities we engage in among ourselves? What relationship do we havwe with others? And how is our relationship with one another related to our relationship to God. The accounts that Ruth Page gives, which arise out of her experiences in her own Church of Scotland and from seven years spent on the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches and the WCC's Commission on MIssion, are down-to-earth, practical, positive and sometimes critical. What stands out particularly clearly is that the word 'with' often cannot be used of what goes on in churches; any sense of togetherness can be sadly lacking. 213 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
