Paperback. Condition: Good. The country is in crisis. Unrest and inner city tensions feed on unemployment. And as the Government struggles to contain the soaring debt, no one listens. Most are tired of 'PR-savvy' words, tired of the 'blame-game' that poses as debate. Divisions in the Cabinet force the premier's resignation. Because circumstances are too dire to afford the luxury of an election, the Queen calls a meeting of the three main party leaders. Some days previously, the Leader of the Opposition had received a letter that intrigued him. The writer, in fact, had held little hope of making contact. For him, it was one last try. Yet much to his amazement he received a phone call from the opposition leader's secretary. When they met, the Leader of the Opposition was polite, but blunt: 'Why should you see the answer when all the experts down the ages have ignored it?' he asked - yet, his interest had been aroused. Following the meeting with the Queen, it was announced that the Leader of the Opposition had been asked to form a national government. With the support of the other two party leaders, he sets out to win over the cabinet, parliament and the country to implement the reform recommended by the letter writer. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Taylor, William B. (illustrator). This book is based on extensive interviews which the author conducted with the older citizens of Glasgow. They reminisced happily about their childhood and youth in the main. The oldest was almost 100, so first-hand memories go back to almost 1890, but those who were children in the 1890's remember also tales of their grandparents and so, here and there, glimpses of much older times emerge. Few of the recollections are later than the end of the World War II. The material has been arranged by subject matter rather than chronologically, and Anna Blair has attempted to link the passages in an informative and interesting way. Tea at Miss Cranston's was one of the many pleasures of that bygone age, and if nostalgia includes remembering also harsher times of poverty and war, or even the down-to-earth reality that made it cost a penny to hire a whitewash brush from a painter and decorator (with a ha'penny refund if it was taken back cleaned), then this book is nostalgic. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Tracing the life of the author's father, this passionate, vivid memoir follows him through his childhood in the west of England, his successful 25-year career in the Indian Army prior to the country's independence in 1947, and his final years in Devonshire, where he raised a family while the symptoms of Hungington's disease gradually set in. Born of a family of impoverished Cornish fishermen, he and his six sisters cared for their dying mother after losing their father at the start of the First World War, before Huntington's reared itself in their lives and led to the early death of three of the siblings. An absorbing, tense story of an emerging family crisis, this is an inspiring narrative showing that, through courage and faith in the face of great adversity, peace can be found. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Part of an eight-volume series providing short biographies of men and women from Roman to Victorian times, Who's Who in Stuart Britain is more than a work of reference: it is a book to read and enjoy. The author has drawn on contemporary research in preparing these biographical essays which convey more than the bare facts of his subjects' lives: he places them in the contact of their time and evokes what was distinctive and interesting in their personality and achievement. The biographies are arranged in a broadly chronological rather than alphabetical sequence so that the reader may easily browse from one contemporary to the next. The index, with its many cross-references, reveals further linkages between contemporaries. Each volume is a portrait of an age, presenting history in a biographical form which complements the conventional approach. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Part of an eight-volume series providing short biographies of men and women from Roman to Victorian times, Who's Who in Late Hanoverian Britain spans the period from the outbreak of the French Revolution to the accession of Queen Victoria. Its themes include the wars against revolutionary France, liberal and radical campaigns for reform of society and institutions, a new and turbulent phase in the 'Irish question', the evolution of mature imperial power, the transforming effect of industrialism on a fast-growing population, and the abolition of slavery. It was a heroic time in many ways. Not only were there the soldiers, sailors and statesmen who defended the nation and consolidated the empire; there were also the great engineers who tackled the obstacles of nature in the conviction that nothing was impossible, evangelical Christians who felt called to take the Gospel to the furthest parts of the world, artists and writers who responded to the visionary spirit, and politicians and students intoxicated by the fall of the Bastille. Revolution did not occur but violence was endemic - two prime ministers fought duels, a third was shot by a bankrupt merchant. 175 short essays place the subject in the context of their age and evokes what was distinctive and interesting about their personality and achievement. The biographies are arranged in a broadly chronological rather than alphabetical sequence so that the reader may easily browse from one contemporary to the next. The index, with its many cross-references, reveals further linkages between contemporaries. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The modern traveller who checks in at an airport departure lounge to be flown in armchair comfort from one part of the globe to another, probably never gives a thought to how extraordinary the idea of air travel seemed only 60 years ago. One man played a greater part than any other in convincing world opinion that flying could - and would - become the accepted means of travelling long distances. His name was Alan Cobham. 60 years after one of his most spectacular stunts to persuade a doubting world, his memoirs are being re-issued. Part crusader, part showman, and endowed with not only charm and luck but also enormous energy, throughout his life he was a pioneer. Whether he was flying to South Africa or Australia or taking thousands of ordinary men and women for their first flight at one of his National Aviation Day displays, or exploring the practical possibilities of refuelling aircraft in flight, Cobham was a man who gave everything he had to the one idea which resulted in the universal acceptance of the aeroplane for civilian use. The book recalls the days of open cockpits with the wind screaming past fragile wings hour after hour; of dangerous landings on mud or grass in countries where no plane had been before; of aviation's heroic age; full of the exhilaration and drama of striving for what was deemed impossible. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Part of an eight-volume series providing short biographies of men and women from Roman to Victorian times, Who's Who in Early Medieval England spans the period 1066-1272, the period of the Norman Conquest, the murder of Thomas Becket, Magna Carter and Simon de Montfort. Though remote in time, its influence is still evident in the institutions of today. What in 1066 were disparate elements of Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian and French had by 1272 coalesced into a realm distinctively and self-consciously English. The process was symbolised by the adoption by Henry III, the builder of Westminster Abbey, of Edward the Confessor as his patron saint and the accession in 1272 of his son Edward I, the first King of England with an English name since the conquest. This volume contains over 160 short biographies of men and women who played a prominent part in their time. Each entry places the subject in the context of their age and evokes what was distinctive and interesting about their personality and achievement. The biographies are arranged in a broadly chronological rather than alphabetical sequence so that the reader may easily browse from one contemporary to the next. Paperback. Condition: Good. This book, which is aimed at the younger reader, endeavours to examine what politics is about in the light of Judaeo-Christian, Liberal-Democratic and Marxist attitudes and beliefs. The authors have drawn upon not only the experiences of Britain and Western Europe but also of the United States and the Far East. At the heart of politics, the book claims, lies the problem of how men and women achieve their desires and expectations under conditions of relative scarcity when the limited resources of the moment have alternative uses. Politics, it is claimed, is about much more than government and administration, parties and elections. It embraces education, information, sciences, technology - in short, the totality of the human situation, and it is global in character. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Christmas means different things to different people. In this book the work of a number of British, European and American writers is used to evoke the traditions, memories and feelings associated with Christmas, sometimes in prose, sometimes in verse, and at other times by a carol complete with its musical setting. Using a quill pen to transcribe every page in calligraphy, Dorothy Boux has embellished each with an original drawing, making subtle use of colour to convey the different moods. The book opens with the mystic atmosphere surrounding the birth of Christ, followed by the tenderness and peace radiating from the cradle as the child is visited by the magi and shepherds. Then Christmas as a joyful family occasion round the fire, with the excitement of the children, the presents, the Christmas tree, the decorations and the food. In contrast there is the countryside in winter, the nostalgia and loneliness of a soldier at war and a sailor at sea on Christmas day. The book closes with a moving letter written during the Italian Renaissance which reads like a hymn to peace, life and love. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Marcus Aurelius, one of the greatest Roman emperors, is remembered less for his military exploits than for his private reflections. His Meditations, as they became known, have been a major influence on Western thought and behaviour down the centuries - the pen is mightier than the sword. Seeking an alternative to faith-based religion, Alan Stedall came across the book and found rational answers to questions about the meaning and purpose of life that had been troubling him. Here too were answers to his concern that, in the absence of moral beliefs based on religion, we risk creating a world where relativism, the rejection of any sense of absolute right or wrong, prevails. In such a society any moral position is considered subjective and amoral behaviour is unchallengeable. Because the Meditations were jotted down in spare moments during a busy life ruling and defending a huge empire, they lack order and sequence. Inspired by the wisdom of Marcus Aurelius, Stedall has sought to present the contents in a more contemporary and digestible way. To achieve this, he employed the Greek philosophical technique of dialogue to create a fictional conversation between five historical figures who actually met at Aquileia on the Adriatic coast in AD 168. Apart from Marcus, they were his brother and co-emperor, Lucius, the famous Hellenic surgeon of antiquity, Galen, an Egyptian high priest of Isis, Harnouphis, and Bassaeus Rufus, Prefect of the Praetorian Guard. The Dialogues afford Marcus and his guests the opportunity to express their views on such topics as the brevity of life and the need to seek meaning; the pursuit of purpose; the supreme good and the pursuit of a virtuous life - issues as relevant today as they were in antiquity. By a gentle process of question and answer, Marcus shows up the weakness of his guests' arguments and reveals how a virtuous life may be lived without the threat of eternal damnation or promise of salvation to enforce compliance. Virtue is its own reward. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Drawing on previously unpublished material from Scotland and North America, this is a biography of Flora Macdonald, one of the most romantic figures in Scottish history. Flora was not a shy young girl, but a resolute woman of 24 who played a courageous part in rescuing the Prince from his enemies. When arrested, she did all she could to protect others who helped the Prince escape, and displayed a maturity that astonished her admirers and won her many friends. She was imprisoned on a ship for five months, taken to London and placed under house arrest. She was never brought to trial and, on her release, her admirers subscribed over #1500 for her. Freed in July 1747, Flora returned to Edinburgh and travelled widely in Scotland, returning twice to London, before settling in Skye and marrying Allan MacDonald of Kingsburgh. Allan was not a good businessman and was ruined by his cattle dealing. Antagonistic towards his clan chief, he decided to emigrate. In 1774, Allan and Flora crossed the Atlantic and purchased a plantation in Anson, now Montgomery County in an area surrounded by relations and friends. When the American Revolution broke out, Allan remained loyal to King George and raised a regiment of Highlanders. Flora actively participated in recruiting the men, displaying once more resolute courage. The Loyalists were defeated at Moore's Creek and Allan was captured. His plantation was ravaged and Flora spent two miserable years in hiding. Allan was exchanged in 1777, and Flora was brought out of North Carolina, having lost all her possessions. They lived in New York and then moved to Nova Scotia, where Allan served with the Royal Highland Emigrants for five years. Flora, weakened by sickness, could bear the cold winters no longer and returned to Skye where she lived with her daughter at Dunvegan Castle. Four of her sons and a son-in-law fought for King George. In 1784, Allan followed her. She died on Skye in 1790. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
