Hardcover. Condition: Good. Third edition. Firmly bound in slightly mottled grey cloth boards with gilt titling to spine. Corners and spine ends are all good. Text pages and illustrations are all clean with no inscriptions, although the closed edges (fore and bottom) are roughly cut with some foxing. The occasional name underlined in the text. Top edge gilt. 3 fold out maps to rear are all very good. Due to the weight of this book, additional postage costs may be requested to international destinations. Soft cover. Condition: Fair. Book internally in very good, clean condition. No markings. Soft blue cover is very age-worn with fading around edges, some small stains and marks. Spine very faded. A rare copy of this book describing Austen's three years living in Southampton, and drawn largely from the author's own letters to Cassandra during the times they were separated, plus a few allusions to this period from other letters and her sister-in-law's diary. Four b&w illustrations, plus maps of the period reproduced on front and back end papers.

Volume I: xvi, 226pp, with ten tissue-guarded coats of arms in colours (including title page), 11 tissue-guarded monochrome plate illustrations and further decorations, illustrations and tables in text, two maps. Volume II: xiv, 224pp, with six tissue-guarded coats of arms in colours (including title page, 11 tissue-guarded monochrome plate illustrations and further decorations, illustrations and tables in text, four maps; and two copies of the Pedigree of Markhams of Morland (formerly Becca) loosely laid in. Both volumes are uniformly bound in half deep blue leather over navy blue cloth, top edge gilt. 4to. Boards are rubbed and scuffed at edges and joints, with some minor marks, leather a little scuffed over mildly faded spines. Endpapers lightly tanned, as are some page margins, and that in volume two has some marks and scuffs; a couple of tissue-guards are creased or have small tears, but generally internally neat, clean and tight. Both volumes inscribed, on the front free endpaper, to David Norman Markham from Gervase Markham, dated at Morland, 1959. A very hard to find set.
