Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. 212 pp. Deutsch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. 480 pp. Deutsch.

ItistheconsequenceoftheTutorial Session which was held on 12th October 2003, preceeding the IEEE Computer Society s Symposium on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems, held in Orlando, Florida. In addition to the core tutorialpresentations, whichcoveredbothadvancesinnetworkqualityofservice (QoS) and in performance evaluation methodology, we felt that it would be useful to assemble a volume in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series which would also include speci c application areas of performance modeling and measurements. Thus the current volume includes three parts: a rst part that speci cally addresses performance and QoS of modern wired and wireless networks; a second one that discusses current advances in performance modeling and simulation; and a nal part that addresses other speci c applications of these methodologies. The network-oriented portion of the volume itself comprises three complem- tary topics: a rst group of chapters deals with novel designs and new issues related to broad-based network performance and QoS, without limitations concerning the connection technologies that are being used; a second group addresses the wireless context; and a nal grouping of contributions considers the topic of wireless ad hoc n- worksmorespeci cally. The part of the volume dealing with methodologies discusses the software s- ci cation of models, the use of certain formalisms such as Petri nets, and some recent advances in simulation. Finally, the third part of the volume discusses other performance applications related to scheduling and to speci c architec- res. 396 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Arti cial intelligence has attracted a renewed interest from distinguished sci- tists and has again raised new, more realistic this time, expectations for future advances regarding the development of theories, models and techniques and the use of them in applications pervading many areas of our daily life. The borders of human-level intelligence are still very far away and possibly unknown. Nev- theless, recent scienti c work inspires us to work even harder in our exploration of the unknown lands of intelligence. This volume contains papers selected for presentation at the 3rd Hellenic Conference on Arti cial Intelligence (SETN 2004), the o cial meeting of the Hellenic Society for Arti cial Intelligence (EETN). The rst meeting was held in the University of Piraeus, 1996 and the second in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), 2002. SETN conferences play an important role in the dissemination of the in- vative and high-quality scienti c results in arti cial intelligence which are being produced mainly by Greek scientists in institutes all over the world. However, the most important e ect of SETN conferences is that they provide the context in which people meet and get to know each other, as well as a very good opp- tunity for students to get closer to the results of innovative arti cial intelligence research. 568 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The fundamental aspect of the Internet architecture that distinguishes it from other network technologies (such as X. 25 and ATM) is that it is c- nectionless (vs. connection-oriented) and stateless (vs. stateful). The heated debateofwhetherconnection-orientedorconnectionlessarchitectureisb etter has lasted for several decades. Proponents of the connectionless architecture point out the great robustness and scalability properties of the architecture, as demonstratedby the Internet. Onewell-knownarticulationofthis philo- phy is the End-to-End Arguments . Opponents argue, rightfully, that there is no known solution that can provide quantitative performance assurances or guaranteed QoS in a connectionless network. It has been widely rec- nized that QoS is a must-have feature as the Internet technology evolves to the next stage. However, all existing solutions that provide guaranteed QoS require routers to maintain per ow (another name for connection used by the Internet community) state, which is the fundamental element of a connection-oriented architecture. The apparent con icting goals of having a stateless network and supporting QoS have presented a great dilemma for Internet architects. As an example, Dave Clark, one of the most respected Internet architects and the author of the famous End-to-End Arguments paper, wasalsoakeydesigneroftheInternetIntegratedServicesArchitecture that requires routers to maintain per ow state. Dr. Ion Stoica s dissertation addresses this most pressing and di cult problem facing the Internet community today: how to enhance the Internet to support rich functionalities (such as QoS and tra c management) while still maintaining the scalability and robustness properties embodied in the original Internet architecture. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The amounts of information that are ooding people both at the workplace and in private life have increased dramatically in the past ten years. The number of paper documents doubles every four years, and the amount of information stored on all data carriers every six years. New knowledge, however, increases at a considerably lower rate. Possibilities for automatic content recognition in various media and for the processing of documents are therefore becoming more important every day. Especially in economic terms, the e cient handling of information, i.e., - ing the right information at the right time, is an invaluable resource for any enterprise, but it is particularly important for small- and medium-sized ent- prises. The market for document management systems, which in Europe had a volume of approximately 5 billion euros in 2000, will increase considerably over the next few years. The BMBF recognized this development at an early stage. As early as in 1995, it pooled national capabilities in this eld in order to support research on the automatic processing of information within the framework of a large collaborative project (READ) involving both industrial companies and research centres. Evaluation of the results led to the conclusion that research work had been successful, and, in a second phase, funding was provided for the colla- rative follow-up project Adaptive READ from 1999 to 2003. The completion of thesetwoimportantlong-termresearchprojectshascontributedsubs tantiallyto improving the possibilities of content recognition and processing of handwritten, printed and electronic documents. 376 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Many challenging problems in information systems engineering involve the manipulation of complex metadata artifacts or models, such as database schema, interface specifications, or object diagrams, and mappings between models. Applications solving metadata manipulation problems are complex and hard to build. The goal of generic model management is to reduce the amount of programming needed to solve such problems by providing a database infrastructure in which a set of high-level algebraic operators are applied to models and mappings as a whole rather than to their individual building blocks. This book presents a systematic study of the concepts and algorithms for generic model management. The first prototype of a generic model management system is described, the algebraic operators are introduced and analyzed, and novel algorithms for implementing them are developed. Using the prototype system and the operators presented, solutions are developed for several practically relevant problems, such as change propagation and reintegration. 264 pp. Englisch.

Consi- ring the half-life period of technologies and knowledge this community is facing, PERVASIVE is one of the most vibrant, dynamic, and evolutionary among the computer-science-related symposia and conferences. The research challenges, e orts, and contributions in pervasive computing have experienced a breathtaking acceleration over the past couple of years, mostly due to technological progress, growth, and a shift of paradigms in c- puter science in general. As for technological advances, a vast manifold of tiny, embedded, and autonomous computing and communication systems have st- ted to create and populate a pervasive and ubiquitous computing landscape, characterized by paradigms like autonomy, context-awareness, spontaneous - teraction, seamless integration, self-organization, ad hoc networking, invisible services, smart artifacts, and everywhere interfaces. The maturing of wireless networking, miniaturized information-processing possibilities induced by novel microprocessor technologies, low-power storage systems, smart materials, and technologies for motors, controllers, sensors, and actuators envision a future computing scenario in which almost every object in our everyday environment will be equipped with embedded processors, wireless communication facilities, and embedded software to perceive, perform, and control a multitude of tasks and functions. 380 pp. Englisch.

The success of the previous workshops has demonstrated that CP-AI-OR is bec- ing a major forum for exchanging ideas and methodologiesfrom both elds. The aim of this new conference is to bring together researchersfrom AI and OR, and to give them the opportunity to show how the integration of techniques from AI and OR can lead to interesting results on large scale and complex problems. The integration of techniques from Arti cial Intelligence and Operations - search has provided e ective algorithms for tackling complex and large scale combinatorial problems with signi cant improvements in terms of e ciency, scalability and optimality. The bene t of this integration has been shown in applications such as hoist scheduling, rostering, dynamic scheduling and vehicle routing. At the programming and modelling levels, most constraint languages embed OR techniques to reason about collections of constraints, so-calledglobal constraints. Some languages also provide support for hybridization allowing the programmer to build new integrated algorithms. The resulting multi-paradigm programmingframeworkcombines the exibility and modelling facilities of C- straint Programming with the special purpose and e cient methods from - erations Research. 432 pp. Englisch.

Part of this understanding has been to recognize that different COTS application sectors can be at different stages of this evolution. Some sectors are just beginning to become COTS-intensive. Some have evolved COTS solutions that are very well matched to their problem domain. Others, including most large-scale applications, still involve their developers in rethinking how to adapt their traditional software architectures, processes, management practices, and personnel skills to accommodate economically attractive but complex combinations of powerful but incompletely compatible and independently evolving COTS products. The series of International Conferences on COTS-Based Software Systems (ICCBSS) has been established as a continuing forum for bringing together CBSS developers, s- pliers, and researchers to summarize and discuss progress toward understanding and resolving CBSS problems. This year's conference theme, 'Matching Solutions to P- blems,'re ectsthisobjective.Wehavebeenfortunatetohavethreeoutstandingkeynote speakers, David Carr, Tricia Oberndorf, and Douglas Schmidt, who have contributed signi cantly both in analyzing CBSS problems and developing better CBSS solutions. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Thisis yet anotherindispensable volume for all probabilists and collectors of the Saint-Flour series, and is also of great interestfor mathematical physicists. Itcontains two of the three lecture courses given at the 32nd Probability Summer School in Saint-Flour (July 7-24, 2002). Tsirelson's lectures introduce the notion of nonclassical noise produced by very nonlinear functions of many independent random variables, for instance singular stochastic flows or oriented percolation.Werner's contribution gives a survey of results on conformal invariance, scaling limits and properties of some two-dimensional random curves. It provides a definition and properties of the Schramm-Loewner evolutions, computations (probabilities, critical exponents), the relation with critical exponents of planar Brownian motions, planar self-avoiding walks, critical percolation, loop-erased random walks and uniform spanning trees. 212 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -What is this Book About At the beginning of the 21st century, computer systems-and especially so- ware-play an important role in our society. Software is contained in virtually every technical device that we use in everyday life (e.g., cellular phones and cars). Furthermore, computers and their software are used for leisure purposes at home (the Internet and computer games), at the office (e.g., writing letters and order processing), and for more complicated tasks such as controlling steel plants or insuring flight safety. Therefore, the quality of software (e.g., its correctness, re- ability, and efficiency) has become important not only in the context of critical systems (e.g., nuclear power plants) but also for our entire society, from business to leisure. Software engineering is the practical application of scientific knowledge for the economical production and use of high-quality software [Pomberger96]. The discipline aims at developing methods, techniques, tools, and standards to fulfill these aims. The number of methods and tools available to the software engineer nowadays is overwhelming; nevertheless, many software projects fail-that is, do not meet their schedules, are over budget, do not meet the user needs, or simply have considerable quality defects. The numerous possible explanations for this situation include poor project management, unsuitable methods and tools used in the project, and poorly developed skills of the participating software engineers. 228 pp. Englisch.

This year we received a record number of submissions (184), re ecting the growth of the eld and the critical role it plays in maintaining the network infrastructure on which we all rely. From the two-page abstracts submitted, the programme committee selected 29 papers whose authors were invited to submit full papers to appear in these proceedings. Particular emphasis was placed on selecting work that we felt was fresh and exciting, so as to encourage a dynamic and interactive workshop that provided a rst public presentation of research that will go on to appear in other, more formal conferences and journals. The programme committee was greatly impressed with the strength and depth of submissions received, which bodes well for the future of the subject area. This workshop took place during April 19 20, 2004 in Juan-les-Pins. Located betweentheAlpsandtheMediterranean, andclosetoNice,CannesandMo naco, Juan-les-Pins is one of the most beautiful sites on the French Riviera. Juan-les- Pins is also close to Sophia Antipolis, the French telecom valley. The workshop could not have succeeded without the support of many people whom we would like thank. First, we thank the members of the programme c- mittee for donating a considerable amount of time to review the unexpectedly large number of submissions, while working to a very tight deadline. 320 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This thesis summarizes most of my recent research in the field of portfolio optimization. The main topics which I have addressed are portfolio problems with stochastic interest rates and portfolio problems with defaultable assets. The starting point for my research was the paper 'A stochastic control ap proach to portfolio problems with stochastic interest rates' (jointly with Ralf Korn), in which we solved portfolio problems given a Vasicek term structure of the short rate. Having considered the Vasicek model, it was obvious that I should analyze portfolio problems where the interest rate dynamics are gov erned by other common short rate models. The relevant results are presented in Chapter 2. The second main issue concerns portfolio problems with default able assets modeled in a firm value framework. Since the assets of a firm then correspond to contingent claims on firm value, I searched for a way to easily deal with such claims in portfolio problems. For this reason, I developed the elasticity approach to portfolio optimization which is presented in Chapter 3. However, this way of tackling portfolio problems is not restricted to portfolio problems with default able assets only, but it provides a general framework allowing for a compact formulation of portfolio problems even if interest rates are stochastic. 184 pp. Englisch.
