JEAN-FRANc;OIS SARASIN (1615-1654) The last decade has seen the publication of monographs covering most areas of solar activity: flares (Smith and Smith, 1963), sunspots (Bray and Loughhead, 1964) and the corona (Billings, 1966). Consequently, of all the major manifestations of solar activity only prominences are without a comprehensive and unified treatment in the current literature. The present book is written in an attempt to remedy this situation, and to furnish an account of some of the most spectacular and most beautiful aspects of solar activity. Our ultimate aim is an understanding of the physical processes involved. I hope that this book may provide if only a small step toward this goal. After an historical introduction and some general definitions Chapter I proceeds with an account of several classification schemes for prominences. Most of the observational material is presented in Chapter II and forms the basis on which different models of prominences are built in Chapter III. Chapters IV and V give most of the physics of prominences, treating, as they do, the formation and stability of these objects. The interaction of prominences with other manifestations of solar activity is the subject of Chapter VI, and the final Chapter VII considers prominences in the larger context: as an integral part of the corona. 176 pp. Englisch.

The institute also tries to stimulate and co-ordinate such research and maintains a close working relation ship with the Central Bureau of Statistics and other data collecting and planning agencies. Other important aims of the N.I.D.I. are to further the training of demographic experts anr to publish and disseminate the results of demographic research. For this purpose an information bulletin is issued at regular intervals, while several other forms of publication - periodical, working papers, etc. - are also being used. This book is the second monograph in the series 'Publications of the Netherlands Interuniversity Demographic Institute', and presents the maior findings of the Netherlands National Fertility Survey 1969, a survey made possible by grants of the Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research (Z. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Public opinion had roots in the nineteenth century with the develop ment of industrialization. What is this public It is the mass of individuals who comprise a society or a nation; this mass in turn is divided into many groups, which have their own interests, prejudices, and beliefs. A govern ment, whether democratic or not, is well aware of the power of public opinion and is anxious to measure and shape it. All three branches of government may direct and educate public thinking, using the instru ments of propaganda. Propaganda is any idea and action designed to influence the views and actions of others. Today's means of propaganda are books, newspapers, radio, movies, television, public schools, and lastly the rostrum. Molders of opinion believe that words, sounds, and pictures accomplish little unless they are carefully organized and inte grated into a well-conceived plan. Once this is accomplished, the ideas 1 conveyed by the words will become part of the people themselves. Special techniques, such as the employment of fear and the play on prejudices, have been used quite succesfully by modern states to impose their own dogmas and policies. Because the social scientist has been aware of the study of public opinion, he may have concluded that it was a modern innovation; but governments have always been concerned with public opinion, though not always understanding it, and have attempted to influence it. 244 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Summary A comprehensive review is given of the literature, and the advantages and disadvantages of the bypass operation are discussed in detail. Of all surgical interventions aiming at revascularisation of the myocardium the aorto coronary bypass operation is the one which indoubtedly has earned its place in cardiac surgery. The most suitable candidates for this operation are those with a normal left ventricular angiogram and a good peripheral vascular pattern. Even in these people the question still remains whether the vein can stay patent for many years; moreover what happens to the proximal coronary arteries is as yet uncertain. In the case of poorly contracting ventricles little good is to be expected from the by pass operation. Possible, anastomosis of the internal mammary artery with a stenotic coronary artery merits preference over a venous bypass. To demonstrate the ultimate influence of this type of surgical intervention on life expectance and on a secondary pre vention of angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, Chalmers (1972) and Spodick (1971) favour follow-up studies of patients who are divided at random into a surgical and a non-surgical group. 1.1. OBJECT The object of this investigation is to establish on basis of the results and complications of saphenous vein bypass grafting (briefly termed bypass surgery): - reliable indications for this operation; - to provide the surgeon with a guide to the choice of surgical technique. 84 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Chemical kinetics aims to explain the factors governing the change with time of chemical systems. The results enable one to define optimum technico-economic condi tions (such as the choice of batch or continuous processes; of concentration, temperature, and pressure; of whether to use a catalyst) for the preparation of products, so that kinetics is intimately bound up with many processes of chemical industry (production, explosions, combustion, propulsion in air and in space). On another level, kinetic studies are indispensable for understanding reaction mechanisms, which implies a de tailed knowledge of the different chemical intermediates (possibly very transitory) of a chemical reaction. But in practice it is rarely possible to work with microscopic quantities of reagents and, with the exception of crossed molecular beams, all methods give only statistical results concerning a large number of molecules. Because of this restriction, it has not always been possible to establish conclusively a reaction mechanism, even for reactions ap parently simple. Numerous attempts have been made to calculate rate constants from the physical properties of the participating molecules; but the introduction of the 'time' factor into calculations of the distribution of energies of chemical processes makes this very difficult, so that the elucidation of mechanisms still depends almost entirely on experi mental studies. However, several theories have been elab orated which, in giving a more and more precise picture of the reaction process, have proved very fruitful, and have become indispensable in designing experiments. 194 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is a contribution to a problem in foundational studies, the problem of the interpretation of quantum mechanics, in the sense of the theoretical significance of the transition from classical to quantum mechanics. The obvious difference between classical and quantum mechanics is that quantum mechanics is statistical and classical mechanics isn't. Moreover, the statistical character of the quantum theory appears to be irreducible: unlike classical statistical mechanics, the probabilities are not generated by measures on a probability space, i. e. by distributions over atomic events or classical states. But how can a theory of mechanics be statistical and complete Answers to this question which originate with the Copenhagen inter pretation of Bohr and Heisenberg appeal to the limited possibilities of measurement at the microlevel. To put it crudely: Those little electrons, protons, mesons, etc. , are so tiny, and our fingers so clumsy, that when ever we poke an elementary particle to see which way it will jump, we disturb the system radically - so radically, in fact, that a considerable amount of information derived from previous measurements is no longer applicable to the system. We might replace our fingers by finer probes, but the finest possible probes are the elementary particles them selves, and it is argued that the difficulty really arises for these. 172 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Everyone knows it is easy to lie with statistics. It is important then to be able to tell a statistical lie from a valid statistical inference. It is a relatively widely accepted commonplace that our scientific knowledge is not certain and incorrigible, but merely probable, subject to refinement, modifi cation, and even overthrow. The rankest beginner at a gambling table understands that his decisions must be based on mathematical ex pectations - that is, on utilities weighted by probabilities. It is widely held that the same principles apply almost all the time in the game of life. If we turn to philosophers, or to mathematical statisticians, or to probability theorists for criteria of validity in statistical inference, for the general principles that distinguish well grounded from ill grounded generalizations and laws, or for the interpretation of that probability we must, like the gambler, take as our guide in life, we find disagreement, confusion, and frustration. We might be prepared to find disagreements on a philosophical and theoretical level (although we do not find them in the case of deductive logic) but we do not expect, and we may be surprised to find, that these theoretical disagreements lead to differences in the conclusions that are regarded as 'acceptable' in the practice of science and public affairs, and in the conduct of business. 444 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -At the 1969 annual meeting of the American Association for the Ad vancement ofScience, held in Boston on December 27-29, a sequence of symposia on the philosophical foundations of science was organized jointly by Section L of the Association and the Boston Colloquium for the Philosophy of Science. Section L is devoted to the history, philos ophy, logic and sociology of science, with broad connotations extended both to 'science' and to 'philosophy'. With collaboration generously extended by other and more specialized Sections of the AAAS, the Section L program took an unusually rich range of topics, and indeed the audiences were large, and the discussions lively. This book, regrettably delayed in publication, contains the major papers from those symposia of 1969. In addition, it contains the distin guished George Sarton Memorial Lecture of that meeting, 'Boltzmann, Monocycles and Mechanical Explanation' by Martin J. Klein. Some additions and omissions should be noted: In Part 1, dedicated to the 450th anniversary of the birth of Leonardo da Vinci, we have been una bie to include a contrihution by Elmer Belt who was prevented by storms from participating. In Part II, on physics and the explanation of life, we were unable to persuade Isaac Asimov to overcome his modesty about the historical remarks he made under the title 'Arrhenius Revisited'. 566 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book contains a number of articles inspired by the NATO Advanced Study Institute on 'Charged and Reactive Polymers l' held in France in June 1972. This general title indicates simply the intention of a series. The meeting dealt mainly with the fundamental problems of the physical chemistry of polyelectrolytes in solution. Some of the articles reproduce the lectures exactly as they were delivered. Some others have been modified to a greater or lesser extent, and this as a result of improvements or new inspiration arising from comments and discussions. In previous larger conferences on macromolecules, polyelectrolytes constituted only a marginal problem and few were the individual communications or short was the time al10tted to this subject. In other meetings of a biophysical character the uses of the techniques of charged macromolecules have been exposed with less attention given to the theories or to the creation or interpretation of these techniques. AU of us felt that the time had come to enumerate and to evaluate this increasing science of polyelectrolytes which has become of major interest. During the whole period of the Institute physical chemists discussed their mutual problems for more than a week, and of ten far into the night! One of the advantages of such an Institute is to enable the Directors and the mem bers of the Scientific Committee to establish a logical order in the lectures; this order has been respected in the present edition. 558 pp. Englisch.
