At that time, we were engaged in writing a joint paper on potential structuring mechanisms in helminth communities; we disagreed on a number of issues. We felt the reason for such debate was because the discipline was in a great state of flux, with many new concepts and approaches being introduced with increasing frequency. After consider able discussion about the need, scope and the inevitable limitations of such a symposium, we decided that the time was ripe to bring other ecologists, engaged in similar research, face-to-face. There were many individuals from whom to choose; we selected those who were actively publishing on helminth communities or those who had expertise in areas which we felt were particularly appropriate. We compiled a list of potential participants, contacted them and received unanimous support to organize such a symposium. Past examples have included the 20th anniversary meeting of the establish ment of the Science Committee in 1978 which made a review of the achieve ments of the various programmes. It proved to be a valuable opportunity to take stock of the impact of science and technology on Western societies and was a particularly useful occasion for a critical analysis of the changing nature and social role of science and technology. In contrast, the Science Committee Conferences in 1973, and 1976, on the 'Technology of Efficient Energy Utilization' and on 'Thermal Energy Storage' were responses of the Committee to specific technological problems, engendered by the then acute energy supply position. A similar technologically oriented study was made in 1975 of the 'Rational Use of Potentially Scarce Metals'. These initiatives were the counterpoint to the bulk of the continuing work of the Committee in funding scientific mobility in the Alliance, as support to civil science. This latter is done competitively in response to unsolicited applications. Fessler over the whole of his pro fessionallife, in the field of applied stress analysis. The conference, held at the Univer sity of Nottingham on 30 and 31 August 1990, was timed to coincide with the date of his formal retirement from the post of Professor of Experimental Stress Analysis in the University. The idea grew from discussions between some of Professor Fessler's academic associates from Nottingham and elsewhere. An organising committee was set up, and it was decided to invite contributions to the conference in the form of review papers and original research papers in the field of experimental, theoretical and computational stress analysis. The Manpower and Personnel Integration (MANPRINT) program is a major military system procurement initiative adopted by the Army to focus on the needs and capabilities of the soldier. This program is unique in that it integrates six areas of user concerns which include human factors engineering, manpower, personnel, training, health hazards, and system safety throughout the development cycle of Army materiel. Even though MAN PRINT was developed for Army systems, the philosophy and techniques used in this program extend well beyond military systems used by soldiers. It can be applied to all products and systems used by people such as automobiles, airplanes, boats, control rooms, automated manufacturing, telecommunications, computers, and medical equipment. Interestingly, the impetus for MAN PRINT came from the senior managers who buy these systems. During the early and mid-1980s, two Army generals, M. R. Thurman and R. M. Elton, who served successively as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, were instrumental in fostering MANPRINT development. By the end of the 1980s, this program was integrated throughout the standard procurement system of the Army. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Over the past decade a great deal of research activity has occurred on either side of the gastroduodenal epithelial interface, with the common goal of elucidating the mechanisms of mucosal protection and how these may be compromised in peptic ulcer disease. A prime stimulus to such research has been the realization that abnormal acid secretion or its delivery into the duodenum in excessive amount cannot fully explain ulcer pathogenesis in the majority of patients. One may envisage the stomach and proximal duodenum as being in a dynamic equilibrium, with aggressive luminal factors, such as acid and pepsin, being counteracted by protective mucosal mechanisms. Until recently, the mechanisms involved in mucosal protection had been poorly defined while the physiology and pathophysiology of acid and pepsin secretion had been elucidated. The impression that gastroduodenal mucosa was protected by a single mechanism has at last been replaced by a more realistic view, suggesting a number of protective zones acting in series. Some of these zones may act as first or second line defences against aggressive factors while certain zones may specifically protect against certain aggressors. 260 pp. Englisch.
