Recognition of cryogenic operations and techniques in the mis sile field is given in many of the included papers. The University of California was certainly wen suited for such a meeting as this because it was here that much early work was done in cryogenics. The title 'Deeper Pathways in High Energy Physics' was adopted to indicate either further penetration into the nature of the structure of the elementary particle or the deepening of the continuously trodden path that gets gradually deeper and deeper, evolving into a trench. In the latter instance, the visibility of the real nature of elementary particles may be getting dimmer and dimmer. It is hoped that some of the papers in these proceedings do, indeed, contain further revelations on the 'deeper' nature of elementary particles. We must not be overly charmed with 'charm' even if it may fit the data of the current generation of e+ and e experiments. It would be much less than prophetic to say that a complete and totally satisfactory theory com~ising the entire physical reality is yet to be discovered, and there is presumably no paper of that kind in these proceedings. Despite this short coming, the editors do not wish to hide their admiration for the caliber of the papers contributed by the participants of Orbis Scientiae 1977. After about 1930, when it became possible to examine the dynamic aspects of a cell seriously and to increase the breadth of our knowledge of the chemicals which are involved, there was a feeling that the elucidation of a pathway or the use to which a compound or a process was put biologically had a ubiquitous character. Among the reasons for believing this was the constancy of the amino acid building blocks for proteins. Not only were the same general structures found regardless of organismic type, but the stereochemistry was the same. This sort of observation led to the idea of the 'unity of nature. ' Few people, of course, thought a complete unity existed, because it was already known in the latter part of the nineteenth century that the sterols, the polysaccharides, and the pigments of various organisms could be substantially different, but only recently, during the last decade or so, has the fuH scope ofthe difference-as weil as ofthe similarity-begun to emerge. A computer network designer is interested in selecting communication channels, error protection schemes, and link control protocols. To do this efficiently, one needs a mathematical model that accurately predicts system behavior. Two basic problems arise in mathematical modeling: the problem of identifying a system and the problem of applying a model to the system analysis. System identification consists of selecting a class of mathematical objects to describe fundamental properties of the system behavior. We use a specific class of hidden Markov models (HMMs) to model communication systems. This model was introduced by C. E. Shannon more than 50 years ago as a Noisy Discrete Channel with a finite number of states. The model is described by a finite number of matrices whose elements are estimated on the basis of experimental data. The early Egyptians and Romans had discovered the utility of lubricants in reducing friction and wear during a period many years B. C. A major break-through occurred in establ ishing the laws of friction (friction independent of area and proportional to load) through the work of Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519), Amontons (1699) and Coulomb (1785). The formula of the Course was inspired by the Gordon Con ference with its combination of a pleasant, friendly and easygoing atmosphere together with a solid and critical scientific diet offered in the morning and evening, the afternoon being free. It is therefore appropriate to devote a meeting to the topic. The first such meeting was organized by the late Ron Duckworth, and held in 1974 at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. As a result of this first meeting, the organization known as International Symposium on the Properties of Water (ISOPOW) was born, and since that first ISOPOW meeting there have been five international meetings. At each meeting, participants from academia and from industry have shared state of the science information pertinent to the role of water in foods. Each meeting has served as a review of the current state of knowledge. ISOPOW 6 is the first of these meetings where Ron Duckworth's presence has not been felt, though he clearly attended the meeting in spirit. A lively group of academics and industrial scientists assembled in Santa Rosa, California, to discuss the current state of the science.
