FINE COPY!Annie Baxter DawbinÂ(1816â"1905), diarist, sailed from her native England in September 1834, accompanying her young husband Andrew Baxter (1813â"55), an army officer charged with guarding male convicts aboard theÂAugusta Jessie.ÂWhile Baxter was stationed at Launceston (until October 1838), Annie made friends with the local gentry about whom she wrote in her journal. This journal, kept until 1868, survives in 32 notebooks. It provides an unusually detailed and intimate story of a flamboyant woman told within the broad social narrative of European settlement. After leaving Van Diemen's Land, the Baxters set up cattle stations first in northern New South Wales, and then in Victoria. During the 1840s Annie returned to Hobart for extended stays with her brother, an officer in the Royal Engineers.First Edition. pp. lv, 668 (Gift inscription on fep, otherwise FINE.) Hardback. Condition: UNSPECIFIED. State Library of Queensland's Margaret Lawrie Torres Strait collection has been included in the Australian Register: UNESCO Memory of the World program. These stories were obtained at thirteen islands, within the archipelago of the Torres Strait, between Cape York, the northern point of Queensland, and the south coast of Papua New Guinea. The Islanders, despite nearly a century of continuous and increasing contact with European ways and thought, have been able to retain unbroken links with their past. It is these people, who over a period of four years, made a conscious effort to pass on to the general reader, whether they live in Torres Strait or elsewhere, part of their heritage which is embodied in legend and myth. Colour illustrations 1970. First edition. A very good ex-library copy only marked by a chip from the base of the rear board, light foxing on the top and fore edges and library stamps on the title page and rear free endpaper. The contents are otherwise fine and unmarked. The 45rpm record is in its sleeve on the front pastedown. The d/w is near fine with no library marks and only light edge rubbing. Scans available if required.
