Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Issued as the University of Nebraska class yearbook for 1892. Quarto. 192pp. Illustrated with heliotype and engraved plates, and reproducing black-and-white photographs and drawings. Brown cloth gilt. Binding has considerable mottling to cloth on front cover, with light mottling on spine and rear cover, rubbed at extremities, and lightly bumped at tips of corners, else a very good copy, with gilt stamping on front cover bright, text and plates generally fresh and clean. This 1892 yearbook, listing Willa Cather as a member of the freshman class at the University of Nebraska, precedes the first appearance in a book of any writings by Willa Cather [the 1894 printing of *The Sombrero* prints a poem and a short story by Willa Cather. Both Cather and John J. Pershing are listed in this volume as members of the freshman class of the University of Nebraska. Cather is listed in the yearbook three times: 1) First as a member of the freshman class, noting that she is from "Red Cloud," and in "Classical" studies. [p. 72]. 2) Second as an "Officer" of the Union Society, sharing the post of "Sergeants-at-Arms," with Louise Pound [p. 104]. 3) Third as a member of the class of "1895" [p. 108 (Cora C. Lyons and Louise Pound are listed as members of the class of 1892 on that same page)]. Much speculation has been made about the intimate relationship between Willa Cather and Louise Pound. According to scholars, Andrew Jewell and Janis Stout, "Cather's affection for Louise Pound was one of the most passionate attachments of her young life" [Jewell & Stout, 'Selected Letters of Willa Cather,' p. 16]. The text also prints a two-page anonymous poem (entitled "Class Saga"), presumably by Louise Pound. Louise Pound is also listed as a member of the senior class, with a five-line c.v., "class poet and orator," member of the Union Society, etc. [p. 46], and as captain of the skating club [p. 171]. The text also lists "John J. Pershing, 2d Lieut. 6th U. S. Cavalry," as a "Professor of Military Science and Tactics" (p. 17), as a member of the junior class (p. 38), and as "Commandant of Cadets," in the Military Department (and reproduces a photograph of Pershing on the leaf facing p. 142). [NB: On October 20, 1892, Pershing was promoted to first lieutenant, and took command of a troop of the 10th Cavalry Regiment, one of the original Buffalo Soldier regiments, composed of African-American soldiers, under white officers (from his wikipedia page)]. *OCLC* locates only two holdings of this 1892 printing of *The Sombrero.*.
