Paperback. 1st Edition. Willow Macky (1921-2006) is best known to New Zealanders for her popular Christmas carol 'Te Harinui', written in 1957 and still widely sung today. A folksong composer and singer in her heyday in the 1960s, Willow recorded and performed throughout New Zealand, celebrating our country, its history, people and places. But behind the public persona as she toured the country was a very different person. All during this time Willow was grieving for a relationship that could not be. Writing poems to her lost love in the United States was Willow's way of assuaging her grief, and these poems were kept hidden for decades. Now, after her death, Willow's exquisitely poetic 'love story in verse' is told here for the first time.

Hardback with dustjacket. This is a book for everyone who has experienced Wellington. It began as a series of pictorial features in the Wellingtonian newspaper, and its offbeat look at the city's history has proved popular. Now it is a book with new pictures and stories. The pictures come from the collections of New Zealand's famous Alexander Turnbull Library. There are photographs, paintings, cartoons, manuscripts, posters, sketches and novelty postcards. No other book about the city has ever included quite such a variety of views. Each has a story, and all are very different: They include Te Aro Pa in 1841, punk protests at Parliament, a young local at Gallipoli and Town Hall pandemonium when the Rolling Stones hit Wellington. Or you can read about jazz dancing in the flapper age, high fashion in the fifties or the great earthquake of 1855. There are wrestlers and rugby players, flying boats and electric trams, gales and shipwrecks, even a singing ventriloquist and a venomous Sumatran rat monkey. There is certain to be something you didn't know about Wellington, a little city truly like no other.

Paperback. Renowned drama educator and director George Webby's wryly-titled memoir begins in Wanganui with a young man intent on a theatrical career in a country where such a dream could earn more than a sideways look. George's journey is an affecting account of New Zealand life from the 1930s to the present as he entertainingly traverses his teacher training, amateur theatrical forays, then life at Wellington Teachers College. His time in the U.S. as a Fulbright scholar were followed by 16 years heading Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School, the country's first training facility for professional actors and directors. He continues to mentor many stars of theatre and film. George takes readers on a memorable and sometimes hilarious outing, peppered with delicious revelations about our leading theatre personalities. Readers will relish the tour of an industry with its penchant for competitiveness and gossip. These reflections on a lifetime of achievement are an insightful, pithy and irreverent view of a New Zealand landscape that has developed as dramatically as any of the major theatre pieces George has directed.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. A Very clean copy. Wellington at Work in the 1890s is compiled from two rich sources: illustrations from four beautifully produced posters that came out in 1895 as supplements to the New Zealand Times, and supporting text from the 1897 Cyclopedia of New Zealand. The result is a colourful account of late Victorian life, with some intriguing facts - did you know that a shipyard in Manners Street built ocean-going steamships, or that a Lambton Quay chemist produced chocolate-flavoured worm tablets for ailing Wellingtonians? This is the companion volume to last year's book Old Wellington in Colour.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Memoirs of a Century: SIGNED By Jack Harris. Inscribed to previous named owner. SCARCE SIGNED COPY. Paperback very good condition, minor creasing to corners. Sir Jack Harris Bt inherited his baronetcy from his father, but would have earned a knighthood in his own right, given his impact as a pioneering manufacturer and civic leader in New Zealand. This readable and entertaining memoir begins with grandfather Wolf Harris setting up a business in New Zealand during the gold rush era. Sir Jack's eccentric mother was a suffragette who later became a member of the notorious Aleister Crowley's coven, designed Tarot cards and pursued Eastern mysticism. His father, a Liberal MP who went to school with Winston Churchill and did indeed know Lloyd George, represented the cockneys and pearly kings of Bethnal Green in the House of Commons. Jack, born in London and educated in Cambridge, set out in the Great Depression to rescue the family business in New Zealand, and under his helmsmanship his firm, Bing Harris, became our largest manufacturer. Like his outspoken wife Patricia, who also features in this book, Sir Jack never shied from public profile on matters of conscience. He will long be remembered for his leadership in the successful Save Manapouri campaign, a milestone of New Zealanders' environmental awareness. Signed by Author(s).

Pictorial h/c / Excellent clean copy/ Illustrated with both colour and b&w photographs, maps and drawings/ top leading corner tip of front cover has a light bump. Ring Around The City: Wellington's New Suburbs 1900-1930. Wellington's population was growing rapidly by the early 1900s, with overcrowding on the flat land boxed between harbour and hills. Water supply and waste disposal systems were slow to arrive, so cholera and typhus were of great concern. Suburban growth, on or beyond the hills, was needed. Trams soon conveyed people between work and home, and within two decades most surrounding boroughs had become part of the city and were covered in new houses. Ring Around the City takes Kilbirnie and Kelburn as case studies to decribe Wellington's growth and relates them to other suburbs, contrasting the city council's tramway system and the privately-run Kelburn cable car.
