Socio-historical Development of the Kampung Cina Settlement in Kuala Terengganu No other Chinese settlements in Terengganu could match the socio-historical significance of the Kampung Cina settlement located at the estuary of the Terengganu River. This settlement has evolved out of early Chinese maritime trade in insular Southeast Asia. This is demonstrated by the fact that Terengganu is regularly mentioned in many early Chinese records. But for some reason, these records did not mention the existence of any Chinese settlements in the state. It was only in the early eighteenth century that a Chinese settlement at the Kuala Terengganu port town was recorded by European traders who traded at the port town. The port town had by then become an international trading port and the Chinese were actively involved in commercial activities at this port town. By the nineteenth century, the Kampung Cina settlement had been firmly established. Based on the origin of the pioneer settlers and other evidences, the settlement could have evolved from the seventeenth century during the late Ming period, making it one of the earliest Chinese settlements in the country.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 109 pp., bibliography, index. This monograph examines the education of ethnic minorities in plural societies within the broader context of majority-minority relations. It comprises eight theoretical chapters dealing with various aspects of the education of ethnic minorities. The education of ethnic minorities in plural societies has always been a hotly contested area, having a dynamic of its own, often involving minority linguistic and cultural claims that go against those of the majority. This is especially true in the case of non-marginal minorities or active minorities who are in a position to make such claims. Notwithstanding the right of the minority groups to use their own language in plural societies, when such claims are pitted against the majority language, they have to accept the fact that the majority language is usually recognised as the language of national integration and the sole or the main medium of instruction in the national educational system and as such, their claims for minority linguistic rights should not override the supremacy of the majority language. It is perhaps for this reason that ethnic minorities have to take a middle course so that their linguistic and cultural claims do not jeopardise their social mobility as well as the nation-building process in plural societies. Such an act of balancing is not only necessary but also crucial to the survival of ethnic minorities within the mainstream society. It is essentially a matter of choice between maintaining their life styles or life chances . It is against this backdrop that bilingual education is perhaps a viable option for ethnic minorities to accommodate their educational needs as well as their role in the nation-building process. While there are different models of bilingual education, the Malaysian model of transitional bilingual education for the ethnic minorities merits our attention. Despite some shortcomings in its implementation, this model of bilingual education has been able to ensure language maintenance within a wider shift to the majority language.

The Chinese minority in Terengganu, Malaysia, are struggling to maintain their Sinic culture, identity and community in the face of socio-political changes and Islamisation since the early 1970s. They are also facing problems due to population attrition from an outflow of the younger generation to larger cities in Malaysia for jobs and further education. The acculturated Terengganu Peranakan Chinese, descendants of the earliest settlers who arrived at least two centuries ago, face additional inter-generational tensions and challenges. This book is based on extensive interviews and fieldwork and includes: an overview of the role of the Kuala Terengganu Chinese associations in promoting traditional Chinese culture and identity; a study of the Peranakan Chinese in Tirok, to further examine issues of identity maintenance and identity shift; and a comparison between the foodways of the Tirok Peranakan Chinese with a similar rural Peranakan community in the neighbouring state of Kelantan to demonstrate the community s continual negotiation of Sino-Malay identity.

Book
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 70 pp., maps, bibliography. Since the 1960s, there have been many ethnographic studies conducted on the Malays, a lesser number on the Chinese, and only a few on the Indians. Most of these studies were undertaken in the 1960s and 1970s at a time when urbanisation had only begun to affect communities and at a time when Malaysia was transiting from a predominantly agricultural to an urban industrial economy in the 1980s and 1990s. More than two-thirds of Malaysians in the Peninsular now live in urban areas. Urbanisation has transformed the social structure of Malaysian society since the 1970s. The Malays, a rural and peasant-based society in the 1950s, are now an integral part of urban society and constitute significant parts of the middle and working classes. The Indians, semi-rural and semi-urban in the past, are now a full-blown urban proletariat. There are few, if any, concerted efforts to document the changes that have occurred in these communities as a consequence of urbanisation. This case study is the first attempt to examine the socio-economic and political consequences of two ethnic groups of rural origins -- one peasant and the other a plantation economy -- now incorporated into an industrial economy and constituting an urban proletariat. This urban working class, neglected by the government in the past, has gained in importance over the years and has emerged as a politically significant influence in Malaysian politics -- particularly in urban multi-ethnic constituencies.

Bangsa Melayu is an innovative study of political ideology in two related but distinct Malay communities in peninsular Malaya and East Sumatra at this time of tremendous political ferment. Prior to this period the kerajaan monarchies headed by the sultans had been central to Malay political culture and identity. With the rise of nationalism, contestation over nationality and the emergence of nation states in the making, new alternatives became available to the Malays. In peninsular Malaya bangsa Melayu (Malay ethnic identity) appeared as a focus of loyalty and community, taking precedence over kerajaan. Meanwhile, in Sumatra the advent of an all-embracing Indonesian republic led to the complete destruction of the monarchical system. In this new edition of a classic book, Ariffin Omar focuses on the basic differences in thinking, temperament and attitude between the two groups of Malays which led to markedly different political outcomes. It will be of enormous appeal to all those interested in the history of ideas and the politics of ethnicity.

'Marco Ferrarese: from the land of Raw Power and Indigesti he comes, fellow journeyman of sweat-thronged underground music, and the Herman Melville of the international fanzine-cum-Web page nation' -- David Ensminger, author and punk historian. Between 2010 and 2015, travel writer, author and metal punk guitarist Marco Ferrarese was the one and only white elephant in the room of the Malaysian metal punk scene. A European inbred metal punk fool stranded in a globalised world of transnational extreme music chop suey. In this highly electric and graphic memoir, Ferrarese tells you how it was to play lead guitar in Penang s thrashcore band WEOT SKAM, negotiating flimsy stage set-ups and shady promoters in order to gel into a developing world s music scene. He takes you on a no-frills road bonanza scouring for sonic extremities across the whole length of Malaysia and Borneo. He chases down long-haired metal punk descendants of Iban headhunting tribes, scrawny Bidayuh anarcho-punk rockers, Kadazan-Dusun activist artists, skullcap-toting Muslim death metallers, and gets you a seat in WEOT SKAM s rickety van for a DIY sleigh ride through the bowels of Jakarta and the vulgar, bogan-filled streets of Bali. Will your seatbelts fasten quickly enough?.

Making and Unmaking the Asylum recounts the entangled stories of leprosy in colonial and postcolonial Malaya/Malaysia and Singapore-decades of heavy-handed biomedical policies and laws enacted in the name of modernity, science and development, interwoven with the personal accounts of those who were sent to the asylums. The leprosarium was a living hell for many. It is also no coinncidence, Loh argues, that the majority of patients were poor and working-class. Yet this book also richly demonstrates how patients resisted being victims-creating new families, forging friendships, working, joining unions, and actively engaging in their communal religious and cultural lives. Having struggled to remake the asylums into homes, ex-sufferers in both countries have been evicted or moved again, their personal and collective histories erased and their real homes exchanged for antiseptic hospital wards, or worse.

Part 1 of this unique book relates the actual accounts of the Colonial Royal Naval Reservists from Australia, Britain, Burma, Hong Kong, India, Straits Settlements (Singapore and Penang) engaged in operations against the Japanese during World War II in the Far East . Part 2 covers Indonesian Confrontation (1963-1966), described as a "silent war". It encompasses the support given by the mobilised RMNVR reservists from Singapore, Penang and Klang divisions to the RMN during anti-infiltration patrols in East and West Malaysian waters, as well as serving in the TAG Operational area of Tawau residency (Sabah -- North Borneo) under the 42 RM Commando & Green Jackets. The accounts in both parts of the book were written by the reservists themselves as well as by naval researchers. A number of the naval reserve veterans have since died, and their rarely known service for king and country are now revealed in this book -- their legacy.

Rapid economic growth coupled with current and projected climate risks are challenging livelihoods and ecosystems in the Mekong region. In some locations unsustainable development has created or deepened vulnerabilities to climate change as well as global, regional, and transborder socioeconomic processes. More accessible and appropriate information is urgently needed on ways to reduce the negative aspects of development and adapt to the impacts of climate change in this region. In this book, the Sustainable Mekong Research Network (SUMERNET) brings together multi-country studies, each of which included significant engagement with boundary partners, to analyze the impacts of, and ways to adapt to, climate risks and unsustainable growth in a highly interdependent region. This book improves our understanding of the linkages between drivers, opportunities, and constraints on the sustainability of the Mekong region s ecosystems--at the transborder, sub-national, and local levels. Economic integration, urbanization, and climate change have impacts that vary greatly among locations. Hence, one key lesson in this book is that it is important to tailor policies and actions to specific places and communities, paying particular attention to the most vulnerable sections of the population, and the capacities of local actors. These multi-site and -country case studies provide much stronger tests of the merits and limitations of common policies than studies carried out in a single country, underlying the benefits of collaborative research.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 219 pp., diagrams, maps, bibliography, index. We are facing rapidly increasing risk of failure in decision-making about large-scale infrastructure in the Mekong Region. What can we do? Give up? No. In the present political conditions, the donors and lenders to the major institutions should really wake up. The momentum and success for better governance in the future depends increasingly on local persons and communities. A radical shift of resources to local institutions with donor support is necessary and urgent. This book provides concrete and concise cases as well as encouragement for discussing, reconsidering and adapting actions to address the current impasse in Mekong water governance. -- Juha Sarkkula Environmental Specialist Finnish Environment Institute This book unpacks knowledge in contested arenas of water governance in the Mekong region by studying the role of dialogues, action-research, the workings of informal and state organizations, and expert perceptions. The researchers and contributors demonstrate how knowledge is negotiated, claimed, or how it may cloak particular agendas and dynamics. The book shows us how knowledge becomes political. -- Bernadette P. Resurrección Senior Research Fellow Stockholm Environment Institute.

In a land of many races where mistrust and stereotype have become ingrained as false truths, you made your audiences weep and laugh and miraculously empathise with their other , the other who dwells within. For the past decade, a number of pioneering independent and mainstream films have put Malaysian cinema and arts onto the global stage. They have also spurred Malaysians themselves into re-looking at well-trodden paths in creative ways. This collection of essays and articles provides scholarly and accessible insights into some of these artistic works through the discerning eye and perspicacious writing of an Australian film scholar who had been resident in Malaysia for several years. The late Benjamin McKay was Lecturer in Film and Television Studies at the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Monash University from 2006-2010. He also contributed regular film and art reviews for Kakiseni and Off The Edge. Both Yeoh Seng Guan and Julian C.H. Lee were Ben's colleagues at the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Monash University, Sunway Campus.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 218 pp., illustrations, bibliography. some foxing (age spots) to outside page edges. Peace negotiations continue between the Moro people and the Philippine state in one of the world's longest struggles for self-determination, now often seen erroneously solely through the lens of regional terrorist links. But what of the Bangsamoro (Moro people) themselves, now a minority in their own homeland? What are the roots of their bitter struggles for autonomy? And how did this resource-rich area become an impoverished zone, riddled with violence? History casts a long shadow over current affairs in Mindanao. The decline of the thriving Sultanates and local economies under Spanish colonialism prefigured Mindanao's relegation to a backwater under the Americans, and later, as a reluctant part of the Philippine nation. This book showcases analyses by the major stakeholders themselves, including politicians, advisers, and members of the traditional elite and intelligentsia. Covering aspects as diverse as the roots of the conflict, economic development, and the various peace agreements, each chapter contains valuable insights to anyone interested in a fair outcome for the Bangsamoro. In addition, the editors, long time scholars of Mindanao, provide 'outsider' pieces on the German media's distorting reports on the Abu Sayyaf kidnappings and on peace-building initiatives in Mindanao. An important compilation, this volume is essential reading for policymakers, researchers, journalists, and academics wishing to understand the struggles of the Moro peoples and their hopes for peace, justice and economic development.
