Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In April 1951, the disappearance of HM submarine Affray knocked news of the Korean War and Festival of Britain from the front pages. Affray had put to sea on a routine peacetime simulated war patrol in the English Channel. She radioed her last position at 2115hrs on 16 April, 30 miles south of the Isle of Wight - preparing to dive. This was the last signal ever received from the submarine. After months of searching, divers eventually discovered Affray resting upright on the sea bottom with no obvious signs of damage to her hull. Hatches were closed tight and emergency buoys were still in their casings. It was obvious that whatever had caused Affray to sink, and had ended the lives of all those on board, had occurred quickly. Sixty years later, in this compelling maritime investigation, Alan Gallop uses previously top secret documents, interviews with experts and contemporary news sources to explore how and why Affray became the last British submarine lost at sea - and possibly the greatest maritime mystery since the Marie Celeste. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Music-hall lies at the root of all modern popular entertainment. It grew from the songs that people sang for their own entertainment in taverns at the start of the nineteenth century. Within a few years rooms were added to inns for shows to be staged. Instead of folk songs and traditional airs, songs were specially composed for music-hall's first professional singers. Purpose-built theatres sprang up everywhere and became big business. Britain's working class had for the first time its own form of public entertainment and its own breed of stars. The professional classes found it tawdry and meretricious but serious writers and artists - because of its vitality and colour - were much taken by it and it became simultaneously the haunt of the working classes and the avant-garde, including the Prince of Wales (the future Edward VII). With a wonderful roll-call of names - Marie Lloyd, Lottie Collins, Harry Lauder and Little Tich - and the songs that have made an indelible impression - I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside, Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay - Richard Anthony Baker's book is more than a nostalgic glimpse of a world now passed away. It is a hugely engaging slice of social history, rich in humour, tragedy and bathos. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In this work, Fred Archer traces the history of the Tibblestone Hundred, from its beginnings. An ancient land with ancient traditions, families living in the Hundred had grazing rights for their cattle, and the filed names still recall traditional uses - Rope Ground, Calves Gore, the Promised Land. In telling the story of the changes wrought by the years in Tibblestone, Fred Archer also tells his own story, from the time when his father and others hoed by hand, to his early life on the farm, ploughing Thurness field with the clay coming up like bacon rashers, to today's agricultural practices, with less labour and more intensive rearing. Archer recreates the changing tenor of farming and village life over the centuries. Illustrated with black and white photographs, this book should appeal to all those with an enduring interest in English country life. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated. This event sparked off a war that was change the lives of millions of people around the world. More than 70 million military personnel were mobilised, and over 9 million combatants were killed. Entire generations of young men from towns and villages across Europe were wiped out. The conflict drew in the worlds great global powers, including the British Empire, France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, the United States and Japan, as well as many other nations. World War I transformed the way in which wars were fought. Cavalry charges and staged clashes were consigned to history, making way for trench warfare, heavy artillery, machine guns and poison gas. Troops learnt to exist for months in confined spaces and ruined landscapes, fighting horrifying battles to push their line forward by only a few hundred yards. World War I changed the face of European society and politics forever, and set the scene for a subsequent world war. On 11 November 1918, an armistice at last came into effect, and we continue to remember today the moment when the guns fell silent on the Western Front. The World War I Story is the perfect pocket narrative of one of the largest conflicts in human history: the Great War. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This compelling memoir starts with a boy's journey through the early years of the 1930s: days of the rag and bone man, street lamplighters, Hercule Poirot, and in the background, Hitler. Then life gets real: at school where cane and cricket bat rule and where the mustard sandwich fills a hungry corner, and even more real with army call-up and training. Then, in 1944/45, comes the crunch of combat in Operation Overlord - a boy's growing-up time. And after all that, with his ears still ringing a bit, comes the blessed call of demob and a taste of new delights: days of farming and finding a woman daft enough to marry him before settling on a farm to start his life as a man. In this nostalgic book evoking recollections of childhood and wartime in Sussex, the memories are the author's, however the sights and events are those that will be remembered by many others, and readers will warm to the narrator, who has found the perfect balance of humour and sensitivity. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. On 22 January 1879 a 20,000-strong Zulu army attacked 1,700 British and colonial forces. The engagement saw primitive weapons of spears and shields clashing with the latest military technology. However, despite being poorly equipped, the numerically superior Zulu force crushed the British troops, killing 1,300 men, whilst only losing 1,000 of their own warriors. It was a humiliating defeat for the British Army, who had been poorly trained and who had underestimated their enemy. The defeat ensured that the British had a renewed respect for their opponents and changed their tactics, rather than fighting in a straight, linear formation, known as the Thin Red Line they adopted an entrenched system or close order foundations. The defeat caused much consternation throughout the British Empire, who had assumed that the Zulu were no match for the British Army and thus the army was greatly reinforced and went on to victory at Rorke's Drift. Battle Story: Isandlwana puts you at the forefront of the action. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The principle of sacrifice is as old as human life itself. Human, animal or inanimate offerings were an essential part of an effort to handle natural disasters, secure good luck or good health, ensure success in war or commerce, in fact to produce any outcome that could better life on Earth. This work provides a general, illustrated overview of sacrificial practices around the world from prehistoric times to the present day. Human sacrifice is shown to have been common to civilizations as different as Ancient Greece and preHispanic Mexico; animal sacrifice is traced through biblical times to modern-day voodoo; inanimate offerings, such as flowers, grain or possessions, are seen to be common to many societies and religions from native Americans to Hinduism. The reasons behind these rituals are examined, and in the case of human sacrifice an attempt is made to understand the mentality of the "victims" who often willingly went to their deaths. Paperback. Condition: Good. Omaha Beach, June 6, 2004. A delegation sent by John Paul II from the Vatican to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D-Day is headed by Joseph Ratzinger, a former Nazi youth who, while resident in Rome for the previous 23 years, is known as The Panzer Cardinal. Ratzinger insisted on being at the commemoration. Garry OConnors biography begins here. And what is revealed from that point is an extraordinary figure, a man who a year later would be Pope, something no one predicted, at the age of 78. How did 12 years of Nazi rule affect the young Ratzinger? Did it inform his stand on religious persecution; famine and poverty; war and its consequences; climate change; stem-cell research and biological engineering; marriage and the family; abuse by priests; abortion, contraception, women priests, homosexuality, declining ordinations and Church attendance in Western Europe? And is it relevant to his astonishing resignation in February 2013? There is no one better qualified than Gary OConnor, author of the international best seller, Universal Father: a Life of Pope John Paul II, to tell this remarkable story. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Henry V is the best-known military hero in English history: better known than Marlborough or Wellington, or his grandfather, Edward III. He enjoyed more success against the French than any of them, coming tantalisingly close to conquering that vast country and imposing an English dynasty; this in a reign of just nine years, in only seven of which he was at war. Even before he died the heroic myth, later enshrined by Shakespeare, was being created. His victories have become the touchstone of English nationalism, English militarism and English imperialism. For good or ill, Henry V now signifies the one-time Greatness of England. He was a military genius, yet his megalomania was not always in the best interests of his own kingdom, let alone the people of France who suffered at his hands. Behind the carefully constructed nationalist myth was a cold, calculating, ruthless ruler who, before his early death, revealed ominous tyrannical tendencies. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This nostalgic, humorous and richly illustrated volume celebrates the Somerset of years gone by. Syd Durston was seven when the Second World War broke out. As well as causing panic in Britains cities, the war transformed life in the countryside in all sorts of ways. This is how one boy remembers life in rural Somerset during that time, where from the age of ten you were at school between 9 a.m. and noon, and then you could work on the land until 8 p.m. It is an elegy to the levels and the moors, and the rich diversity of wildlife that could once be found in the fields thousands of grasshoppers, large and small, hopping everywhere, butterflies of all kinds feeding on the red clovers that were now in flower; the smell of the honeysuckle and the dog roses in the hedges and a lament for the landscapes and ways of life that we have now lost. From the outbreak of war to the drama of D-Day, Syd whose watercolour paintings, many of which illustrate this collection, aim to show the reality of farming life as it was then captures a moment in history as it really was. Containing more than 120 paintings, sketches and drawings, it will delight residents and visitors alike. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
