Cloth. Condition: Very Good. In dustjacket, without clipped flap. Blue cloth covered boards with gold lettering along spine. Some white soiling/flakes stuck to bottom edges of boards. Appears to be unfortunate transfer from (probably painted) and sticky shelving. Otherwise this is vey good+/fine with tight binding. Clean, sound, without markings. Stated 'First Edition' on copyright page with this number string: 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3, meaning 3rd printing of First Edition. Affixed to front panel of jacket is silver emblem stating, 'Nominee for the 'Edgar' Allan Poe Award for Best Mystery Novel of 1985.' This was Auster's first novel published under his own name, after Squeeze Play (Avon, 1984) published under the pseudonym Paul Benjamin. For my money the first book of his New York trilogy, remains the author's best work, though he has published many other excellent books. And should be considered among the greatest American writers of the last half century.

This is number string: 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3. Therefore, this copy is a 3rd printing/First Edition. Tight binding. Clean, sound, without markings. City of Glass was Auster's 2nd novel and the first published under is own name. (Prior to this one, Squeeze Play (1984) (Written under pseudonym Paul Benjamin, 1984). City of Glass was the first volume of his The New York Trilogy, to be followed by Ghosts (1986) and Locked Room (1986). These three novels work well as stand alone stories. There is no reason to feel obligated to read them in order. Honestly there is no reason to read them all, other than the fact they are excellent, arguably the best books of Austers long, still active at age 75. In 2021 he published Burning Boy: The Life and Work of Stephen Crane, a non-fiction work that might be my favorite book of that year. [203 pages].
