Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 261 pages (complete). In Afrikaans throughout. Signed by Brink on the title page. First edition, first impression of what is perhaps Brink's most famous novel. Dealing with death in detention of an anti-apartheid activist, Brink infuriated the apartheid government. Not only did Brink write about what was officially denied, not only was it a surgical dismemberment of apartheid, but he did so in Afrikaans. So, the book was banned (although Brink did manage to print 3000 copies underground). Banning, of course, adds notoriety to a book, notoriety often brings sales, attention, appreciation. And so these added to what was already known to be an exceptionally acute and accurate novel. The boards have handling and storage marks, wear, scuffing all about. They are resolutely benign. The contents are assured. There are flurries, blushes of foxing fore and aft and to the papertrims. Otherwise, the pages are clean, clear, confident, bold, certain. fk.
