Paperback. Condition: Very Good. During World War II Bill Sinclair wrote over 2,300 pages of letters to his beloved wife, Lisbeth. Discovered in his wartime valise, Bill's photographs and private papers are now brought to life, marking 75 years since the end of the Second World War. They provide a unique perspective and alternative narrative to some of the most important events of the time. On 30th July 1941 Bill Sinclair's daughter was born but it was on that same day that he embarked on a ship that would take him to war. It would be almost four years before Bill saw his daughter for the first time due to his posting to General Headquarters in Cairo supporting key offensives including Alamein in the Western Desert Campaign of North Africa and Cassino in Italy. He was mentioned in despatches and awarded the MBE for his part in the Italian campaign. Against the backdrop of war, when circumstances permitted, football provided a brief distraction and a glimpse of normality. Bill organised and participated in matches along with famous names of the time often in front of crowds of thousands. It is an opportunity to forget, if only for a few hours. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. 'A la Recherche du Temps Perdu' by Marcel Proust is a magnificent and towering achievement of French literature, published in English translation in twelve volumes between 1922 and 1931, and totalling nearly one and a half million words. It is difficult for many readers to find the time and motivation needed to keep going through to the end as Proust has a rich and sometimes discursive style. However, a powerful structure underlies the whole work which is not revealed till the last chapter. This selection, which is less than a quarter of the original, includes all the crucial characters, places and themes needed to understand this and omits everything else. It is not intended to improve the original novels by editing, as many wonderful passages and descriptions have been left out. The style of the book in its vocabulary and sentence structure is unaltered. Nothing is paraphrased or condensed. The text reads as a continuous lively narrative with much of Proust's wit and humour and follows the sequence of the original, showing the development of all the major characters and including all the incidents which are referred to in the closing passages which resolve the whole novel. Proust himself encouraged the publication of "selected passages showing a coherent whole which is not diffused and will make one want to read the whole book" and this is the aim of this selection. It is intended to inspire the reader to go to the full text and enjoy individual sections in the knowledge of where they fit into the whole. An abridged of Marcel Proust's literary classic Remembrance Of Things Past with a new translation of Time Regained by the editor. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Two precious Gold Horns were sacrificed by a group of Angles in South Jutland shortly before they migrated to England. The pictures on the horns offer a substantial explanation of the pre-Christian religion of the Angles. This book describes how many Anglian groups from the continent migrated to England and brought with them their culture and English language. It provides an original analysis of archaeological finds and documentation of the Anglo-Saxon religion. This can be observed in finds from the heathen Anglo-Saxons, - the Sutton Hoo ship burial, Franks Casket, the square-headed brooches, idols, amulets and ceramics. The book also explores Runes - the most remarkable invention of the Angles. The book will be enjoyed by anybody interested in English heritage and especially those with an interest in pre-Christian Anglo-Saxons. English heritage pre-Christian Anglo-Saxons. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Maestra's first collection of poetry combines artistic ballads, dramatic lyrical works and original philosophical concepts to explore a variety of contemporary topics with a pensive and metaphorical approach. There are several encryptions throughout this volume and its cover, including the author's real name in the last poem 'Untitled'.The theory of binary existance, as mentioned in the preface, suggests that we exist as two entities: the public and the private. The more prominent our public self is, the less prominent the private becomes and vice versa. This is due to a balanced equilibrium of collective emotion shared by the population, which also allows any entity to possess two opposite states (good and bad, according to intuition), with an equal chance of switching to the other state at any given time.Inspired by the myth of Prometheus, the cover depicts the granted flame within each one of us signifying our capacity for reason and imagination - all that is independent of our mortal form and is handed to history after our physical death. Illuminating the sign translated as 'free another to free yourself', the flame on the central altar has no shadow of its own, but casts one on the broken and charred pillars (physical forms) that have preceded it in their quest to free themselves and others through their art and have achieved immortality after their flames have burned out. To history, they remain human - hence the physical form remains, and the gift (the flame) has left a char and is placed in abstraction. A collection of poetry by a young poet which combines artistic ballads, dramatic lyrical works and original philosophical concepts to explore a variety of contemporary topics with a pensive and metaphorical approach. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Motoring in Mitteleuropa consists of extracts from the authors travel diaries to various central European countries: the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. It focuses on castles and chateaux but also touches on towns, churches and restaurants. It does not pretend to be a modern Leigh Fermor or Pevsner. The author is a linguist and the work contains a number of linguistic jokes (some hidden). The word motoring is slightly misleading: the author likes driving long distances but has no interest in cars and in fact cannot tell one from another. The friends with whom he travelled have, perhaps surprisingly, remained friends. A light hearted travelogue which describes some of the culture and history found during several motoring holidays in central europe Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.
