Trade paperback. Condition: Good. 139, [3] pages. Cover has sticker residue and scuffing on front. The Creative Nonfiction Foundation pursues educational and publishing initiatives in the genre of literary nonfiction. Its objectives are to provide venues, including Creative Nonfiction magazine, for high quality nonfiction prose (memoir, literary journalism, personal essay); to serve as the singular strongest voice of the genre, defining the ethics and parameters of the field; and to broaden the genre's impact in the literary arena by providing an array of educational services and publishing activities. The Creative Nonfiction Foundation was incorporated in 1994 and is a private not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Among the contributors are: Yogi Berra, Matt Wood, Frank Deford, Christopher Buckley and Jeff Greenfield. The editor taught want-to-be writers in the Arizona State University MFA program. He gave the class a baseball assignment because almost half of major league teams conducted spring training nearby. This all-star collection of essays about the great American pastime dissects the game one element at a time to try to get at why we find ourselves in the stands or on the field, season after season. Matt Wood recalls his career at first base, "a position for aging veterans with bad backs and gimpy knees, . the place for guys with enough offensive skills to command a place in the batting order but no place on the field." The boundaries of J.D. Scrimgeour's outfield are "inexact, and infinite--a state of mind." And John Thorn explains how "baseball in America is a sort of faith for the faithless, and its seven virtues are the same as those of religion." Plus, in "Keeping It Real," we learn about developing story ideas. John Thorn (born April 17, 1947) is a sports historian, author, publisher, and cultural commentator. Since March 1, 2011, he has been the Official Baseball Historian for Major League Baseball. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.
