Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Various (illustrator). First Edition. 600 g; XII, 248 pages, last page blank, includes endnotes, bibliography, index. Illustrated with political cartoons, and black-and-white photographs. Illustrated dust jacket. Charles Kingston was a leading player in Australia's Federation. He became Premier of South Australia in 1893 yet cared little for the norms of the polite, colonial society of the late 19th century Adelaide and, together with his wife Lucy, was ostracised accordingly. He was accused of adultery and subsequently adopted an illegitimate child; he challenged a political opponent to duel; yet he introduced radical and progressive legislation on industrial conciliation and arbitration, on the creation of the State Bank of South Australia, and on trade and tariff reforms. Thanks to him South Australia led the world on the enfranchisement of women. And Kingston's commitment and contribution to the cause and creation of Australian federalism was beyond question. -- front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7Ā¾" - 9Ā¾" tall. Photographic illustrated dustwrapper. The book has no damage. The letters Walter and Mary Richardson wrote to each other between 1854 and 1877 depict, with often surprising frankness, a loving relationship between a man and a woman was both mutual and enduring. Aspects of their relationship were used in their daughter's classic trilogy The Fortunes of Richard Mahony. Henry Handel Richardson and her later biographers, however, tended to focus more on the man and on the woman. Certainly, many more letters from Walter survive, and Mary's letters are much more difficult to read in the original. However, they reveal her to be at least Walter's equal in passion and devotion. -- front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7Ā¾" - 9Ā¾" tall. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Colour illustrated dust jacket. The book has no damage whatsoever. The letters, written to people who had left Melbourne but were interested in its progress, describe all kinds of social and political developments Victoria. When the recipients were friends or family members, Graham's comments develop a delightfully gossipy, personal tone. Historian Paul de Serville describes the correspondence as "a social history in miniature of Melbourne and the country districts written by an insider". The letters cover the period from 1854 to 1864, and follow on directly from those previously published in Pioneer Merchant. Size: 8vo - over 7Ā¾" - 9Ā¾" tall. This moment was not his alone, nor could it ever have come about without him - Gough Whitlam turned to Graham Freudenberg, touched him lightly on the shoulder, saying, 'It's been a long road, Comrade, but we're there', and walked out to meet the spotlight. Acclaimed biographer Jenny Hocking's Gough Whitlam: A Moment In History is the first contemporary and definitive biographical study of the former Labor Prime Minister. From his childhood in the fledgling city of Canberra to his first appearance as Prime Minister (playing Neville Chamberlain), to his extensive war service in the Pacific and marriage to Margaret, the champion swimmer and daughter of Justice Wilfred Dovey, the biography draws on previously unseen archival material, extensive interviews with family and colleagues, and exclusive interviews with Gough Whitlam himself. Hocking's narrative skill and scrupulous research reveals an extraordinary and complex man whose life is, in every way, formed by the remarkable events of previous generations of his family, and who would, in turn, change Australian political and cultural developments in the twentieth century.
