Trade Paperback. Condition: Good. First Printing. 416 Pages Indexed. White covers. Moisture exposure to the right bottom reflected in light wrinkling to the front cover and first 75 pages. There are no marks, stamps, or names and excepting the slight wrinkling the interior is faultless. It is a study of the romantic life of Einstein as well as a study of physical science in the early 1900s. It is a biography of one of the brightest minds of the period 1900-1920 and his accomplishments as well as his personal and romantic life. A well-researched work with fifteen pages of notes and 70 bibliographical references. The author has an interesting way of presenting some of the facts of the history of science up to 1900. Contents in twenty-five chapters and Five Parts: Runaways, Relative Motions, The Revolutionary at Home, Gravity's Rainbow and Master of the Universe. It would be a mistake to judge Dennis Overbye's book Einstein in Love: A Scientific Romance by its cover, because this book is as much a story about science at the beginning of the twentieth century as it is a story about the romantic life of one of the great scientific minds of the time. At its heart, this book is a biography of Albert Einstein that focuses specifically on his most productive period as a scientist, a time that spans roughly the years 1900-1920. In the course of 370 pages, it discusses his accomplishments as a scientists and the episodes that were shaping his personal life during this time. Of the two, Einstein's place as a scientist is most well-known to even the most unscientific among us.The fact that Einstein's likeness was recently found on television dancing among the stars while selling something as mundane as a soft drink is a testament to his position as the archetypal scientist in our collective subconscious. And it is to these unscientific masses that Overbye has pitched his book. That doesn't mean that this is not a well-researched work. In fact, quite the opposite is true. The fifteen pages of end notes and 70 bibliographical references attest to the research that has gone into producing it. Rather, it is a warning to mathematicians that they won't attain a deeper understanding of the scientific work of the time by reading this book. They will, however, learn some of the basic facts of the history of science at the end of the nineteenth century.

Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First American Edition Stated. 335 pages. Dust jacket has uncliped price 18.95 and a 3/4 inch tear plus a small jacket tear and edge chips and scuffing. In the early hours of September 1, 1983, a Soviet fighter plane shot down Korean Airlines flight 007 as it flew without authorization over the Soviet Union's airspace. The Boeing 747 plunged into the Sea of Japan, killing all 269 passengers and crew. Reactions around the world were of horror and indignation. The Reagan Administration energetically asserted that flight 007 had drifted off course accidentally, and that the Soviet Union fired knowingly without warning . With the passage of time much new information has come to light which casts grave doubts on the American claims and the integrity of those who asserted them. The author demolishes the Reagan version of events and sets this tragedy in the context of vital American and Soviet strategic interests in the North Pacific. It will be hard for a reasonable person to read this book and not conclude that flight 007 was on an intelligence mission for the U S when it was shot down.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 382 Pages. This is the Cambridge Edition of the text of Mr Noon now correctly established from the original sources and first published in 1984. This is a reprint of the 1985 edition published in England by Granada. .The Appendix contains Maps, Note on the Text, and Chronology. Minor moisture stains at top of last ten pages. Front cover has edge wear and turned up corner. Introduction by Melvyn Bragg. Edited by Lindeth Vasey. This is Lawrence's autobiographical novel of a young man's emotional and sexual awakening. For decades Mr. Noon was known only as a long short story in which Gilbert Noon, a young schoolmaster and one of Lawrence's alter egos, becomes entangled with a young girl and loses his job. It ends with Gilbert deciding to leave the stifling morality of his provincial village. But Gilbert's story was continued in a manuscript that was lost until 1972. In it he travels to German and falls in love with a married woman, clearly modeled on Frieda Lawrence, and elopes with her to Italy. In some ways it is a sequel to Sons and Lovers.

Hard Back. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 274 pages. Ellie Haskell and her husband, Ben, haven't had a vacation in years. Now their bags are packed, and they're ready to set off for a romantic getaway to France. But things go awry when a chain-smoking gypsy approaches Ellie with a dire prediction: Take that trip at your peril! Those ominous words ring true when her prodigal father Morley suddenly appears with an urn containing the remains of his lady love, Harriet, whose death in a car accident has left him bereft. When Morley loses the urn in a bizarre series of events, Harriet's family is furious, and a bewildered Ellie asks some probing questions: What exactly is in that urn? Is her father a pawn in a deadly game? Is this what the gypsy had foreseen? The answers are hilariously revealed in a caper so charming it could only have come from Dorothy Cannell.

Roberts is an undisputed master of his craft. His acclaimed "History of the World" (OUP) has been one of the most astounding phenomena in modern-history publishing. W/ it, Roberts has made hundreds of thousands of readers around the globe deeply aware of the pleasures of history & has demonstrated that a historian can create a view of the world that is genuinely international in its scope & interests. In "Twentieth Century" Professor Roberts has given us an authoritative & engrossing survey of the tumultuous century just past. "Twentieth Century" allows us to understand the extraordinarily dynamic & extraordinarily disturbing century through which we have all lived. Brilliant both for its grand political sweep & its unprecedented grasp of massive social change, Roberts' work goes beyond simple narrative in distinguishing the major long-term changes that run beneath the flux of events to establish a true world history & not merely a story of the relations of powers & governments. As Roberts shows, the fundamental changes of the 20th century fall outside the framework that conventional international relations & its history employs. These changes include a worldwide increase in life expectancy, revolutionary strides in science & technology, & the radical configuration of the global economy. In order to give emphasis to his wide-ranging themes, Roberts opens w/ a grand survey of the century's beginnings to show the ways in which the world of 1901 did NOT foreshadow our own, & how all of our most basic assumptions from this earlier time have vanished. Chronicling the historically significant events of the last hundred years in a sweeping & always lively continuous narrative, Roberts then closes his work w/ a penetrating retrospect which assesses the position of humanity as it confronts the dawn of a new age. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: J.M. Roberts, former Warden of Merton College, Oxford, is the author of numerous works of history, including "History of the World" & "A History of Europe.".
