Book
Paperback. Condition: Good. During the Cold War, more than 36,000 individuals entering Canada claimed Czechoslovakia as their country of citizenship. A defining characteristic of this migration of predominantly political refugees was the prevalence of anti-communist and democratic values. Diplomats, industrialists, politicians, professionals, workers, and students fled to the West in search of freedom, security, and economic opportunity.Jan Raska's Czech Refugees in Cold War Canada explores how these newcomers joined or formed ethnocultural organizations to help in their attempts to affect developments in Czechoslovakia and Canadian foreign policy towards their homeland. Canadian authorities further legitimized the Czech refugees' anti-communist agenda and increased their influence in Czechoslovak institutions. In turn, these organizations supported Canada's Cold War agenda of securing the state from communist infiltration. Ultimately, an adherence to anti-communism, the promotion of Canadian citizenship, and the cultivation of a Czechoslovak ethnocultural heritage accelerated Czech refugees' socioeconomic and political integration in Cold War Canada.By analyzing oral histories, government files, ethnic newspapers, and community archival records, Raska reveals how Czech refugees secured admission as desirable immigrants and navigated existing social, cultural, and political norms in Cold War Canada. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

"A thoughtful account of life on a reserve and of the interaction of Native people with White society, this volume is based on the author's three years' experience with one Indian band on the prairies, during a period of intense negotiation between the band and the federal government. Lithman's analysis of the political manoeuvring of both sides makes this a rare contemporary account.".

"In his engaging memoirs, Henry Duckworth takes readers from his student days in Winnipeg and Chicago in the 1930's to his time as president of the University of Winnipeg (1971-1981) and chancellor of the University of Manitoba. With humour and modesty, Duckworth recalls the trends, changes, and crises that he witnessed throughout his long university career. He offers his ovbservations, his opinions, his 'version of the facts', providing a special insight into critical years in Canada's university education history, as well as his own specialty, atomic research.".

"The bibliography . has adopted an historical viewpoint and does not include references to buildings that date after 1940 because those references are normally accessible through library catalogues and periodical indexes. It includes book materials arranged alphabetically by author or title, periodical articles listed chronologically, and special materials and collections grouped together at the end. All the items in the bibliography are numbered and cross-referenced in the Index by Architect, Index by Building, and Index by Topic. The Index by Topic provides references by place and building type. It is therefore possible to look up a building by architect, name, place, type, or date. Locations for the items in the bibliography are given in almost every case: it should be remembered that other locations probably exist besidesthe one offered in the bibliography. Notations about illustrations, contents, and biographical and bibliographical material have been supplied wherever necessary. Illustrations are very often listed in detail in order to direct the researcher to specific information.".
