Unclipped jacket has some wear with a couple of small tears (one repaired to front from inside) & slightly sunned spine. Boards are in very good condition being clean with bright gilt titles on spine. The lightly tanned pages have been very gently used so are in excellent condition being crisp, clean & inscription/annotation/crease free, although there is a small black pen mark to top text block edge. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Terence Hanbury "Tim" White (1906-1964) was an English writer best known for his Arthurian novels, which were published together as The Once and Future King. One of his best-remembered works is the first of the series, The Sword in the Stone.The Book of Merlynis the conclusion ofThe Once and Future King, published separately and posthumously. In 1941, White had revised his Arthurian works to include an anti-war theme, and sent them along with this work to his publisher, intending them to be published together.The publisher declined due towartimepaper shortages and White's antiwar message. TheHarry Ransom Humanities Research Centerof theUniversity of Texaspurchased the bulk of White's personal papers and manuscripts between 1967 and 1969. In 1975 the original manuscript forThe Book of Merlyn was discovered amongst this collection, and was prepared for publication, with a prologue by Sylvia Townsend Warner. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in lovely condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, apart from a faint tidemark to the lower corner of pages up to page xv.
