The text is illustrated by 16 coloured and 29 black and white plates. Illustrated endpapers, from a lithograph by F. C. Terry, 'The Vineyard'. Bottle coloured green boards with gilt titles on the spine. The corners are rubbed, and the top 2 corners are bumped. The head and the heel of the spine are slightly rubbed. There are some minor shelf wear evident and paper edges have some dust marks. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing a reproduction of 'Glover's House and Garden' by John Glover, 1840. Ochre and black titles on front the cover and on the spine. Dustwrapper faded particularly on the spine, front, and back panel for the first 3.5" . The Corners are chipped and there is some minor chipping on top of the spine. This book was first to explain the background which Australian gardeners garden in the manner in which they do. It traces the story gardens in Australia from the findings of Joseph Banks to the 1970s and all the difficulties besetting the early gardening pioneers to the enormous variety of gardens of the Seventies.
