Edges, endpapers and outermost leaves quite foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Good to very good condition. "There are in the history of South Africa few official expeditions about which less is known than that of Dr. Andrew Smith to the Zulu monarch, Dingane, in 1832. The reason for this probably lies in the fact that the real motive for the expedition, which had very far-reaching results, was as far as possible kept secret, and any official report that may have been made by its leader was either delivered verbally or, if written, was treated as confidential and therefore never made public. No official reference to it is to be found in either our South African Archives or in the Public Record Office in London, and no report of it exists in either institution.".

Endpapers and outermost leaves somewhat foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Good condition. "This book owes its inception to the fact that in July, 1944, my friend and colleague Mr. Ernest C. Chubb . happened to show me a manuscript ., the journal of a surivivor from the wreck of the Grosvenor, a sailor named William Hubberly. . The Hubberly journal . presented me with something quite new, a day-to-day account of the vicissitudes of one group of castaways, told with such circumstantial detail, particularly with regard to the topography of the country passed through, that I was convinced that a critical examination of it would make it possible for the route followed by the unfortunate people to be traced completely, and for the first time.".

Second Series No. 21. 8vo; original dark grey cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt publisher's device to upper cover; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xxxiv + 441 + (ix); endpaper map; colour frontis. tipped in; map; plates. Near-fine condition. "William Coates Palgrave was active in the former South West Africa (now Namibia) over a period of 25 years. He spent some eight years in the country as private individual before becoming a civil servant in Griqualand West. This prepared him for his work as Special Commissioner to Hereroland (or Damaraland, as it was called) and Namaland, undertaking five consecutive commissions in all on behalf of the Cape Government. This volume contains the official journals, or in some cases minutes and reports, which were produced by various secretaries during these commissions. The main theme of Palgrave's instructions and work was an endeavour to introduce British influence in the territory - an endeavour which was interrupted by the beginning of the German colonial period from 1884/1885. In a way the occupation of SWA by British South Africa in 1914-1915 would symbolise a resumption of the earlier efforts by Palgrave. The realities of a SWA on the brink of colonisation come alive in this record of discussions between Palgrave and the eminent tribal leaders of the period on the issues of the day, giving a unique insight into the character and dyanamics of a society in a crucial stage of its history.".

From Maléo und Sekukuni we learn how the first missionaries tackled their task, what difficulties they had to contend with, how great were the privations and dangers they had to endure, and how profoundly their religion governed their conduct. The book is also an historical document that should be more widely known than it is; for instance, it describes the terrible state of insecurity and oppression to which the Natives were subject while they were under the rule of blood-thirsty and despotic chiefs.'
