It was built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in the 1870s in the style of a French sixteenth century chateau. Filled with the magnificent and varied works of art the Baron collected throughout his life, and embellished with carved panelling from old Parisian houses, it is to an unusual degree the conscious expression of one man's taste. However, Waddesdon later became beneficiary of treasures from other family collections both in France and Great Britain, and consequently has today one of the finest collections of eighteenth century furniture and decorative arts in the world. Dying as a childless widower, the Baron was succeeded by his youngest sister, Alice, who, continuing to run Waddesdon in the tradition established by her brother, set a standard of maintenance in every department of the house and gardens which has never been surpassed. The condition of the pictures, furniture; embroideries, carpets and china at Waddesdon in which modern generations can delight is due to her notable and determined success as a conservationist. Her traditions were carried on by the next owners, Mr and Mrs James de Rothschild, who presented the house and its superb contents to the National Trust. Mrs. de Rothschild, the author of this brilliant and delightful book, is the oldest living member of the Rothschild family. Through her unique knowledge of her predecessors she is as clear and as amusing about life at Waddesdon in the days when it welcomed Queen Victoria and Gladstone as she is about the problems and rewards of maintaining one of the most visited of all National Trust properties. The beauties of the house may be glimpsed from the illustrations to this book. They are accompanied by the light, sure sketches of character and admirably told stories of the family and their guests, and of the men and women, architects, gardeners and housekeepers, who gave and still give life to Waddesdon. This volume is a joy for collectors, dreamers of the grand life, enthusiasts of Edwardian splendor and followers of history's most flamboyant financial dynasty.
