Condition: Sehr gut. 122 p. : ill. ; mit s/w. Abbildungen und Illustrationen, Zustand: geringe Gebrauchs- u. Lagerspuren, sehr gutes Exemplar. Text / Sprache: Englisch , Cover subtitle: Includes 'Waltzing Matilda' and other well-loved poems. Paterson, A. B. (Andrew Barton), 1864-1941 , More than fifty years after his death, Banjo Paterson remains Australia's best-loved poet. With such classics as 'Clancy of the Overflow', 'The Man from Snowy River' and Waltzing Matilda' he helped make the bush and its people forever part of Australian folklore and won the hearts of succeeding generations. Paterson's exhilarating, evocative ballads were born of his twin loves - sport, especially horse-racing, and the bush. In his poems he captured for all time the romance of the outback, from 'the saltbush plains' of the western inland to the pine-clad ridges of the eastern ranges. He immortalised a marvellous range of bush characters, bringing to life the laconic humour of shearers, drovers and punters, and the daredevil feats of jockeys and stockmen. In this collection of poems readers will find all their familiar favourites. Paterson's comic touch and unmatched ability to spin a yarn are as fresh as ever and living proof of the timeless quality of his verse. 2029A ISBN 0670904635 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 560 25 cm, gebundene Ausgabe mit Original-Umschlag,

SYNOPSIS: Cattle and other livestock consume more than one third of the world's grain while billions of people go hungry. Meanwhile, affluent Americans, Europeans and Japanese gorge on beef and increasingly die from heart disease, cancer and other diseases closely correlated with consumption of meat and dairy products. Rifkin ( Entropy ) drives home the moral paradoxes inherent in this situation in a timely, tremendously important book that ranks with Peter Singer's Animal Liberation and John Robbins's Diet for a New America as a call to nutritional sanity, environmental ethics and awakened conscience. The chapter on lax inspection procedures and abysmal conditions in slaughterhouses is shocking. Backed by persuasive evidence, Rifkin states that cattle are a major cause of pollution, deforestation, desertification and, through the methane they produce, global warming. Charting the human-bovine relationship from the Lascaux caves to the junk-food hamburger, he suggestively argues that beef-eating has helped support male dominance, gender and class hierarchies, and myths of meat as a sign of strength and virility.
