Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Worcestershire brothers, Mac and Barry Goodwin's, true story told from a bedrock of fact but as living flesh. Their mastery of the air as teenagers and then as RAF pilots in 605 (The County of Warwick) Squadron and 609 (West Riding) Squadron in WW2 flying Hurricanes and Spitfires is set against a privileged family background. It includes Barry's hard won fame at Shelsley Walsh, hill climbing in a supercharged Frazer-Nash with the best of the drivers of the pre-War era; be with Barry driving the Hill; be with them over Dunkirk and with Mac in the skies protecting England as the Battle of Britain unfolds. This is a two generation family story of triumph and tragedy; of love and loss which demonstrates the devastation wrought on those families who lose sons and daughters in war. This is fast moving historical fiction that will woo you and move you. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Book
Paperback. Condition: Good. This book uses the Third World question, how do you feed a hungry person?, in order to answer the First World's need for social renewal and to build the Big Society. It points out that if the well intentioned State does things 'to' and 'for' people it will merely make them dependent. However, if it enables them to do things for themselves, it will make them independent and proud. The book takes Balsall Heath, an inner ring neighbourhood of Birmingham, as its starting point. It analyses why it had become blighted by the 1980s and how its residents renewed it in the years since then. From having been one of Birmingham's least desirable areas, it is now one of its most attractive ones. Residents there feel empowered, confident and enjoy caring for each other. The book looks at how this transformation has happened and how it can be replicated in any neighbourhood. In particular, it asks and answers the question: How can social renewal take place without external funding by empowering residents and by using existing mainstream budgets differently? Senior Politicians from all the parties have visited Balsall Heath and said that it holds the key which could unlock the door to the renewal of many neighbourhoods throughout the land. Those visitors include: David Cameron, Iain Duncan Smith, Oliver Letwin, David Willetts, Paddy Ashdown, David Blunkett and Hazel Blears. But, don't just take their word for it that Balsall Heath is special and that the lessons to be learned from its self-help success can be applied in many neighbourhoods. Read this book and consider for yourself how important these lessons are. More, consider how you can apply them in the neighbourhood where you live or the neighbourhoods for which you have statutory or political responsibility. The whole country has asked: What is the Big Society? Is it important? And, if it is, how can we build it? If you want positive answers to these questions, read this book. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This work by over 25 authors, gives an insight into the successes and failures of town and country planning over the last 50 years. Written largely by professional planners, this illustrated book should be of interest to everyone with an interest in planning and development. The book tackles the subject decade by decade. For each decade there is an introductory overview of prevailing conditions at the time, followed by a number of the most important examples to indicate the development of planning expertise in each period. The examples are drawn from experience in the West Midlands, a varied region with the metropolitan area of Birmingham and "The Black Country" at its heart surrounded by countryside stretching from the Cotswolds to the Peak District and the Welsh Borders. The concluding section of the book takes a glimpse beyond the year 2000 and gives an indication of the directions for planning in the early years of the next century. The publication celebrates the Golden Jubilee of the West Midlands Branch of the Royal Town Planning Institute. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. It was 12th September 2001. The world awoke to the grim replays of the Twin Towers disintegrating in a dust cloud of unimaginable proportions. Everyone sensed that the world had just become a more dangerous place. In many cities the Muslim community became a target for the mindless anger of a minority. In Birmingham, the Central Mosque was daubed and Muslims going to prayer were spat at. The sense of this city as a model of good community relationships was damaged by the impact of events thousands of miles away.Rabbi Leonard Tann, leader of Birmingham's Orthodox Jewish community, phoned Dr Mohammed Naseem, Chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque, to offer his support and ask if he could visit the Mosque. They were joined by Bishop Mark Santer and together they gathered on the steps of the Mosque, before the press, to proclaim the bonds of mutual trust and respect between the faith communities of the city.Out of this act of humanity the Birmingham Faith Leaders' Group was born. Six years on and there are now 15 leaders from all the major faith communities of the city - Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jews, Muslims and Sikhs. This book explores a year of their work from July 2006 - 12 months in which acts of terrorism overseas, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and violence on the streets of Birmingham challenged the faith leaders to seek harmony and justice and to explore the impact which faith could bring to bear on the city of Birmingham. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Fiddlers Three & Other Stories is an anthology of the best fiction by Arthur Rice comprising almost two decades of short stories, plays and the compelling, novella-length, Fiddlers Three. Some stories are historical thrillers, others are gripping yarns based on the milieu he knew well: fine art investment, horse racing, tax avoidance and the golf club. Dipping into times past, his intriguing 'who really done it' stories, bring to life infamous real-life characters like Lord Lucan, Jack the Ripper and the highwayman, Jonathan Wild as he gives well-known events a twist in a provocative, yet plausible, way that challenges received wisdom. Very sadly, Arthur Rice died in January 2011 but not before seeing the final proof of this book. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. When Alex can't play cricket with his friends because of lockdown, he finds comfort in cricket stories. He asks Dad to tell him the story of how the symbol of the Bear came to be on the Warwickshire badge. Dad doesn't disappoint, with a tale involving bears, shield warriors and the game of turnip ball (which is remarkably similar to cricket!). This story contains important topical messages about looking after each other and being part of a 'family'. All royalties from this book will be given to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity and NSPCC Childline, via the Edgbaston Foundation. Covid-19 lockdown meant that hugging Grandma and Grandad could not happen for many weeks, but the mutual love never waned. We have been strengthened by support given and received from those with a shared love for our wider interests, including cricket. Rachael and Jim have, in their words and illustrations, captured fantastically why being part of the 'Bears' Family always makes us feel so proud, never more than in 2020. This story contains something for all ages to appreciate and treasure. Norman Gascoigne, former Chairman Warwickshire CCC. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Fine. It is a thrill to have written a local history book in conjunction with the "Express and Star". The paper is not only the biggest-selling evening newspaper in the country outside London, but also it is marked out by its commitment to its region and the people of that region. There can be few papers that are as local as the "Express and Star" and that commitment to localness affects positively every aspect of its reporting and coverage. The Black Country is fortunate to have a paper so dedicated to the well being of Black Country folk. I thank the editor of the "Express and Star", Adrian Faber, and its management for giving me the opportunity to write so extensively about the Black Country.
