Book First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Good. Firrst Edition Assumed. 57 Pages Stapled binding with green covers. There are seven lines of penciled notes on the front endpaper. Pages 12 thru 15 the character named Callimaco is high-lighted with green marker pen. No other marks. Mandragola is a rarity: a literary work written by a thinker who wrote political treatises of the greatest importance. This translation attempts to be as literal as is consistent with English usage. When possible, the same Italian word is rendered by the same English one. Special attention has been paid to words and phrases which are significant in other writings of Machiavelli-such as animo, bene, case del mondo, prudenzia, remedio, and virtu. In the poems, rhyme and meter have given way to meaning, although the stanzas, lines, and (where possible) word order of the Italian are reproduced. Idioms are translated as closely as possible in the text, and are explained in the notes. Passages in Latin are reproduced in the text and translated in the notes. The volume contains a brief Introduction and a Note on Names of Characters.

Previous owner's name in pencil at half-title page. Penciled underlining and notation to pages--particularly in the first half of books. Notation does not obscure text. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Dangerous words, hard words, fighting words, straight talk, sweet talk, wrapped talk, allegory, words that are moving, respect vocabulary, figurative language, role distance: these are the words which inform the various papers in this unique collection of viewpoints on the intricacies and subtleties of verbal art in Pacific cultures. The basic argument in all the essays is that talk makes a political difference. Each contribution shows how the styles, structures and situations of language use in various Pacific societies actively shape not only the political contours of daily life in these communities but also broader understandings of and sentiments about the social world.(Publisher).

Softcover. Condition: Good. Re-issue. Herbert Hoover's place of birth was the American heartland; but for much of his life, he was a stranger to his native country, and never more so than while he was its president. His career followed a pattern familiar in the history of the United States - not quite the log cabin to the White House, but almost. Humble birth, hard work, the desire for achievement and finally, wealth, public service and the presidency formed a progression recognizable in much of the national experience. There was continuity with the past also in the values Hoover acquired in his youth and which stayed with him through life. The great crisis of Hoover's life was the depression, which ironically began soon after he took office in 1929. He then had to ask whether those values were still appropriate; and the answer he gave differed so markedly from that given by his countrymen that a gulf. opened between him and them that was never to be bridged in his lifetime. Perhaps because he felt that the burden of blame -for the depression thrust upon him was unfair, he remained out of step. In the years of the world's peril after 1939, he fought a lonely battle against the dominant opinion that the fate of the United States could not be detached from the fate of men elsewhere. He died unpopular and isolated -largely disavowed by his own party and embittered by the lack of understanding. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 307 pages. some ink underlining & margin marks. no Dust Jacket as published. White titles spine & front. illustrated by a few b/w. drawings (cartoons).
