Elliott, Southern California Quarterly] The history of Nevada has been, very largely, the story of numerous mining booms within the state, beginning with the Comstock Lode in 1859, and continuing into the twentieth century. Each of the major discoveries be came a "mother" camp spawning dozens of offspring. The resulting mineral activity brought into existence hundreds of camps dependent for their existence on the ore bodies which had made their founding possible. In most instances, the valuable ore deposit was not extensive and the towns sank rapidly into oblivion. From time to time these ghost towns have been resurrected in print. The book under review is the latest attempt to recapture the past glory of Nevada mining by reworking the "ghost town bonanza." It is obvious throughout the volume that the author not only enjoyed his work, but that he had a real sympathy for and understanding of those who opened the mines, erected the mills, and built the towns. The result of his efforts is an always entertaining and sometimes even fascinating story of Nevada ghost towns. Maintaining the reader's interest through dozens of these old camps is not an easy task, for these "ghosts" all too often show a deadening monotony in the way they experienced the cycle of discovery, boom, and bust. Ashbaugh's secret was a diligent search through many sources to discover the unusual features of each community and a dramatic, free-swing-ing style which had been gained from years of experience as reporter, editor, and feature writer on newspapers throughout the world. . .

Lehman is about the Santa Anita Assembly Center for the Japanese During WW11. The bombing of Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941, shocked all Americans and was tragic for more than one hundred thousand Japanese Americans living in California. The majority of these people were citizens-sober, industrious, loyal-had little bearing on vents when the ensuing fear forced the American government into the unprecedented decision to move them away the Pacific Coast and into concentration camps. 101 pages with original photos.
