Soft Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Advert Reproductions, Etc (illustrator). 1st. Sub-titled "A History of Working the Land" John Wilson's tractor book covers the amazing number of uses to which these versatile machines have been put since introduced to NZ. Tractors, in the accepted sense, were preceeded by the massive steam-driven traction engines which sounded the beginning of the end of the domination of the horse in so many applications. While the use of tractors on farms is the main theme of Wilson's study their other uses are considered, including crawler tractors, used mainly in major roading or construction projects, but invaluable for cutting roads and tracks for farm development. The first generation of "today's" tractors were imported in 1904 -- Wilson's book marking the centenary of that event. Horses were quickly replaced in all aspects of farm use and tractor technology advanced with equal rapidity. Farm and crawler types were adaptable and saw service in two world wars, performing a wide variety of tasks, used in Antarctic exploration, orghard and crop work, loaded aerial topdressing aircraft, drove assiciated equipmenr througn power-take-off adaptions and in many cases, with the aid of Kiwi ingenity, developed a reptutation as "can do anytthing": machines. This book recalls nostalgic names of tractor manufactures, many now long gone. Few wiould know that even Lamborghini entered the tractor market in the 1970s. Wilson's tractor book is lavishly illustrated with photos, some in colour, many tractor advertisement reproductions and enlivened with an occaional cartoon. This is a great addition to the story of NZ development, boosted by mechinisation, particularly to the agricultureal industry. The author's research shows that in 1919 there were 136 tractoris in NZ, WWI having delayed more rapid growth. By the 1950s the figure exceeded 78,000, almost all Bitish or US makes. Anyone with an interest in NZ's tractor history should have this one, it covers every facet of the topic. First edition from Whitcoulls of 2004, 144 pages including index, illusrations throughout. Pictorial card covers are VG+, as is the text block, no inscriptions.

Softcover / Paperback. Condition: Fine. First edition. Paperback. Stealthy, calculating, chillingly indifferent - that is the poisoner. And death - perhaps slow, perhaps agonisingly sudden - is the aim. Whether we read of it as fact or fiction, this subtle form of murder has fascinated and horrified us for centuries. Brought dramatically to life from contemporary newspaper reports, this collection of New Zealand cases, from 1859 onwards, reveals the ingenuity and cold-blooded determination of those who poison. 'Baby farmer' Minnie Dean - she carried one victim in a tin hatbox. Eric Mareo - did this bohemian musician really murder his wife? Henry Stryche - a respectable clerk who tried to bribe a doctor to get rid of his wife. Phyllis Freeman - was it jealousy that led her to give poisoned sweets to one woman and murder another? Tom Hall - the dashing young man who poisoned his wife and her father out of sheer greed. Questions remain unanswered in many cases; some are still talked about; all were a sensation in their day. Now you can read about these men and women who resorted to poison - the coward's weapon. Illus. 127pp. p/back. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. F. with no creasing to covers.
