From lower cover: A spellbinding and authoritative recounting of the battle that Stonewall Jackson's admirers prefer to ignore. Engrossing word portraits of the major players and battle recreations so real that smoke drifts from the pages.Must reading for the Civil War scholar, as well as the buff, interested in Stonewall Jackson and his nationally significant Valley Campaign. Researcher Ecelbarger has consulted every conceivable source- published and manuscript- and in doing so has separated the important from the banal and chaff to tell as story that gives new insights into Stonewall Jackson's first five months as army commander and his first battle in which he called the shots.highlights major new interpretations on troop movements, command decisions, numbers, and the Jackson-Garnett controversy that add to our knowledge and will date all previous publications focusing on the Kernstown campaign and battle. The nineteen troop movement maps with their focus on the March 23 battle are works of art. Signed & inscribed. Octavo, blue leather (hardcover), gilt letters, map illus. endpapers, ix, 156 pp. From dust jacket: This book takes a broad look at MacArthur's war as he guided his forces more than 6,500 miles to victory -- from his arrival at Melbourne, Australia after his escape from the Philippines on March 22, 1942, to his entry into Tokyo on August 30, 1945. That was a line of advance in warfare exceeding anything in any previous war including Alexander's march to India and Caesar's conquest of Gaul. All this was accomplished with much less loss of life than in earlier major wars. MacArthur's rapid advance to Tokyo could not have been achieved without the close support of the U. S. Air Force and, especially, the troop carrier and airborne operations. The story traces the activities of the 374th Troop Carrier Group, one of MacArthur's major support units, and how MacArthur's strategy affected the small air force unit -- rated the most decorated unit of its size in the Pacific war. Finally, the story contains a detailed description of the flight into Atsugi, the kamikaze training base at Tokyo, the first enemy of Japan to land on Japanese soil and the dangers this small group of 28 men of Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force personnel faced on landing. Military History, World War II, WWII. yslictel.

Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Reissue. 1996 reissue of 1888 original. A fine copy in a fine jacket.fin. xiv, 158 pp. On March 23, 1888, Doctor William Warren Potter wrote, "It is expedient that every man who can do so, should record what he did, and what he saw done, during his military service. Acting upon this conviction, I have attempted to carry out this purpose in my own case in a truthful manner, without any attempt at self-praise, or to embellish the pages with anecdote or eulogy." Potter, who served as the assistant surgeon of the 49th New York, and as the surgeon of the 57th New York, left behind an account of the war from a doctor's perspective. He documents the history of the 49th New York from its creation in August 1861 through Fredericksburg, when he transferred to the 57th New York. From there his accounts follow the events through Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Petersburg, and Deep Bottom. Potter gives the reader an intimate view of the War from a surgeon's perspective. One Surgeon's Private War is a realistic tribute to the medical staff.
