Book
"As well as the small-scale question of how there can be a church, this book also broaches a larger question. Now that the historic basis of human association is breaking down, how can we rethink human community? In the sexual sphere, and therefore in the civic and religious realms also, the ancient politics of subjection is going to pass away." Book
Paperback small octavo, very good condition, few tiny dents & scuffs rear cover, minor edgewear. 255 pp. A great introduction to theology, particularly the problems about language that confront the modern theologian. Analytical philosophy, existentialism, Biblical criticism and continental neo-Protestant theology, all contribute to a single argument about the problems of human likeness to God (and anthropomorphism) with precision. Lucidly explains the issues raised for Christian belief both by empiricist analytical philosophy and by existentialist hermeneutics. Following Wittgenstein, he holds that we must allow each linguistic form to disclose its own logic - to speak in terms of myth, symbol and analogy. Existentialist interpretation cannot exhaust the meaning of theological language, otherwise we are reduced to anthropology. We must progress to ontology - to talk about the transcendent Being of God. A timely counter-poise to over-facile analyses of the logic of theology that result in a kind of Christian atheism.
