First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Aumonier, Stacy. One After Another. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1920. First U.S. edition. (Published the same year by Hutchinson in the U.K.) Octavo, 272 pp. Original blue cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, fore-edge rough-trimmed. Early gift inscription on front free endpaper. A very good copy of an uncommon book. #1085. $45. This novel is listed in the short and rather eccentric bibliography of relevant books at the back of Jeremy Scott's anthology of fantastic tales, The Mandrake Root (1946). It hangs onto the genre by its fingernails, the rationale presumably resting on some talk about a haunted Guarnerius violin that might have contributed to the doom of the novel's musical heroine, Laura. But the author does have five stories listed in Ashley & Contento's Supernatural Index (of anthologies). That fact, together with the high general quality of the writing here, might give fantasy specialists reason to pay closer attention to this work. The story starts out as a social comedy with impressively funny passages and a stylistic flair that should earn the reader's respect. Then it tip-toes into sensational waters -- supernatural curses, hereditary doom, booze and drugs. Finally it sails into the safe harbor typical for this period: a marriage that delivers the hero from the ignominy of having to work for a living. It's possible that these tonal shifts could have been worked into an overall harmony. But what the reader ends up with instead is, indeed, the disconnection alluded to in its title. Still, an interesting piece of work for its parts and its potential.
