Couverture rigide. Condition: Très bon. Dust Jacket Condition: Satisfaisant. Edition originale. Octavo, cloth. First edition. The inhabitants of Fort Repose, an isolated, small town in central Florida, cooperate to maintain order and stability during a catastrophic nuclear war. This best-selling novel is an "American pastorale, a hymn to self-sufficiency and the virtues of small-town life . {The] book has something of the appeal of George Stewart's EARTH ABIDES, although it lacks that work's sweep and grandeur. Fundamentally a cosy fantasy, ALAS, BABYLON belongs very much to its period. It would be impossible to write such a hopeful novel about nuclear war today." - Pringle, Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels 29. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-421. Brians, Nuclear Holocausts: Atomic War in Fiction, 1895-1984, pp. 273-4. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 115. Survey of Science Fiction Literature I, pp. 38-42. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Inscribed First Edition (states "First Edition" with no additional printings on the copyright page) of this seminal nuclear apocalypse novel and regular entry on "greatest science fiction novel" lists. This copy is inscribed by Pat Frank on the front endpaper with a quite interesting association: "For the scientific disciples of the U.S. Naval Medical Research Laboratory, New London. With best wishes for success and peace. Pat Frank '60." Black cloth, 254 pages. The book has a hint of dampstaining at bottom of the front board. There's a circa 1960 book store sticker on the back pastedown page. The dust jacket is price clipped and has edge wear including small chips and some surface paper loss at the top and bottom of the spine and fore edge corners. Also, it appears a later jacket was matched with a first printing book as there is a "third printing" statement on the front flap of the jacket. Signed by Author(s).
